The problem is the good liar - the one who knows enough to convince but is just after a quick buck. In my home country I have had as many as seven quotes for a job - when it was rewiring the whole house I immediately eliminated the one who literally took out a piece of fag packet to make notes, the man who said the existing jumble of wires is "what you expect these days" and went for the one who said "that's terrible". He could have been lying but fortunately his work was immaculate and the electricity inspector who, by law, had to check the installation asked me who did the work - he was amazed at how good it was. But here a 'builder' I checked out for a relative gave me perfect answers but still left her with some very unsatisfactory work. The ONLY way to know if a builder will do satisfactory work is when he has finished.

I hope one day to refurbish a house in the Dumaguete area and thought my sister-in-law's builder would have been the one I used - now hearing about his work I am left wondering if there is anyone out there who can be trusted. Any posting here asking for a 'reliable, honest and competent builder' is met with laughter.

    I don't know.
I think reliable Builders are few and far between, about the only way to build here as I see it is; you must do your research and know how things should be done, even if you interview a Builder and he says all the rights things and actually knows his job but he may still cut all the corners anyway? one thing the Pinoy always falls back on is (I no understand you) possible may be better to get a foreigner that speaks English and tell him exactly what you want and the way it has to be done.
I have three workers at my site at this time, early on when my back was turned they mixed a batch of very wet concrete, I then told them to dump it and start again with the warning if ever that happens again the man in charge of the water goes home, it is difficult to get it consistent every batch but I no longer get it really wet like soup.
