The cost per KWH seems high at least on the surface. My brother living in Calgary pays half the price per KWH but his bill has a bunch of fixed charges. We both consume 500 KWH a month and have bills of 5000 pesos. I don't think we are that hard done by having a monopoly supplying us. The government seems to keep an eye on the power companies fairly closely, Meralco (Lopez family) get their fingers wacked from time to time.
I suppose it comes down to more power cuts = less electricity consumed = less profit for NORECO, easiest and fastest fix, increase the price of the product, problem solved, back to sleep
I think this needs putting more into perspective so I did a little research....what else would you do on a Saturday morning? lol Anyway - some numbers: The Average wage in the USA is $55k pa which equates to about Php 7500/day. In the UK it's GBP 31.5k which equates to about Php 5600/day whilst in the Philippines it's Php 162k (Php 444/day). The published electricity prices (per kWh) in the same 3 countries are $0.132 (Php 6.6), GBP 0.125 (Php 8) and, as we know Php 10. Therefore a day's pay buys you 1,136 kWh (USA), 701 kWh (UK) and 44.4kWh (Philippines) respectively. Therefore I consider the price of electricity in the Philippines extremely expensive.
I partly agree with your point however; the cost of a generator, transformers, switchgear and transmission lines is probably about the same. Administration costs could be lower due to labour costs. But (and there's always a but) the administration costs could be higher due to the large number of customers that only consume 20-30 KWH/month. If you are a local nothing is cheap. My method for evaluating cost of living is pretty crude. How many hours does a guy have to work to buy a pack of smokes and a beer.
Show Pony i agree except on the equipment ie, Generators, transformers, switch gear and transmission lines.. One of the big problems here is that even there are National agency's sort of looking after the power sector most is left to their own devices, there are so many little "Co-operatives who don't have the capability to purchase directly from the manufacturer so they all have to go through the same middle men or multiple middle men that you and i do everytime we purchase something..They also pay import tax and customs duty which i think is absolutely stupid but it is what it is.. So costs are probably a lot higher considering some one has marked up the item 300% and due to political reasons controls the market.. IMHO
