I've never seriously performed or practiced the clean and jerk (it is incredibly technical and dangerous) but 127kg seems like a ridiculous amount of weight for someone that only weighs 55kg. Very impressive. I played around with it with only 60kg and determined it wasn't a lift I should be doing if I wanted to avoid injuries.

This lift was a pretty uncommon thing to see in gyms. I imagine with this being in the news you are going to see a lot more of it once the gyms open back up. Probably one of the most dangerous lifts to perform and be anywhere near, especially untrained novices or guys who ego lift. I bet workout related injuries sky rocket because of this gold metal.

I sense your tongue buried in cheek with that, but on the more insidious side, there are lots of corporations, politicians etc leeching on the back of her stunning achievement. She has even been given a promotion in the army on the back of it. Who knows whether she is a deserving soldier?

The country should be asking itself why it is that with a population of 110m it has taken almost 100 years to win a first gold. True success in anything is achieved by brief celebration and then planning for improvement. I sense that may not happen here, preferring to bask in this one gold.

I thought she previously served in the Air Force and quit to pursue her chance to compete in the Olympics. Maybe this is just them saying she is welcome to serve again?
Sports generally don't take priority when a large portion of your population are struggling just to feed themselves. The pool of population that has the ability to eat a diet and has the free time that would allow them to compete internationally is quite low. They have recently (in the past few decades) created legislation to reward athletes that compete internationally. It takes time and a lot of money to build athletic programs.

Lack of government and private business support - funding, proper diet, supplements, coaching, schools offering after class training, and the list goes on.

I would really love to see the numbers of Philippino's who are starving to death.. this is a say so by the government to budget money to pocket and give the locals a free access to the JolleyBee dumpster.

I didn't say "starving to death", I said "struggling". If you think a very large percentage of the population here aren't struggling you are very out of touch. The people in countries that have strong athletic programs that regularly win medals in the Olympics are FAR better off than the people of the Philippines.

You must live in a different part of Dumaguete than i do,, all i see is little kids playing on the beach, locals certainly aren't hungry and have enough money for Red Horse's every day on the beach and seem to be able to feed their 4 or 5 fighting cocks.. These peoples life styles have not changed in 40 year since i have lived here but they certainly aren't stuggling any more than before,, the ones who are struggling are the ones who found easy credit and bought sh*t houses from sh*t builders and new cars and motorcycles at zero interest.. They deserve it.

Well, a diet of red horse, rice, fried chicken and dried fish and then spending your free time feeding chickens ain't getting you to the Olympics. But let's not act like they are well off and don't struggle to eat a balanced diet required to become a top world class athlete. They make poor nutritional and life decisions because of a lack of education and opportunity, another issue that holds them back from meeting their potential.

You also have to look to the monetary incentives. A nobody can get lucky and win some money at a cockpit, buy some more chickens and then increase his chances of winning more money. Cockpits are everywhere and the cost of entering and the time needed to train a cock is very attainable to poor Filipinos. Cockfighting is a money sport here and there is plenty of money to be made. What incentives are there locally for weightlifting, track and field, swimming, basketball, soccer, hockey, football, modern pentathlon...basically any sport other than boxing? (The Philippines has won medals, 11 of them, in the Olympics. Mostly with boxing.) The cost of entry and the time required to master them, is also out of reach for most Filipinos.

You act like winning a gold in the Olympics is no big deal and any country should be able to do it. There is a very good reason why wealthy countries dominate sport. It is not a coincidence and you are delusional if you think Filipinos are just as well off as people from the countries below.
