I think some people behave like this because they can. In countries where they cannot then we see the difference - some may tell me that these latter countries are repressive dictatorships but they don't have to be. All it needs is a standard of enforced discipline which puts SOCIETY first - but if that requires a benign dictatorship then so be it.
I had a problem with an oil-fired boiler repairman (repairperson in modern lingo) who complained that I watched him as he worked - too sure I did: 1. To check he did what he said he did when I got the bill 2. To learn as much as possible so I could fix some things myself in the future He refused to work for me again! No loss as the next guy I employed was better and no more expensive. And, btw, that was a problem having a 12 year old apprentice as it is was against the law. I think BG continued to use him as firing someone can be a nightmare.
Don't think it's ever too late. In 2015, at ages 72 and 62, we bailed out of california, got rid of 95% of our crap (kept one tie and one blazer (never wear) and kitchen utensils). The 95% included two cars, our library except for 20 books, all furniture. Researched the world, decided on Dumaguete, visited for a month and in July 2016, moved here permanently and brought along the puppy, only got one car. I think we got out at the right time, that place is a mess. Takes a bit to adjust but it's worth it. Only regret is not keeping more kitchen stuff.
Well done you Edward, so that makes you both aged 78 and 68 now, Wow ! At 75 + 61 years of age, my wife and I have minor health issues, which are holding me personally back from making that permament move, much as I love the laid back life style I find in the provinces in Phil; My regret, is that we didn't make the move when I retired 10 years ago. Wishing you both the best of health. JB
6 years later and my asawa still blames me for the frying pan I dumped before coming here - but she did get 12 Jumbo boxes (99% her clothes, shoes and handbags and 1% the less important things!). I admire you for dumping 95%.
