Alternatively, it might be worth looking into something called DialNow (link), a VOIP (voice over IP) system that works worldwide (so also while you're travelling). I have been using that for almost 7 years now to call family members around the globe without social media accounts regularly and companies/banks/government offices occasionally. In those 7 years I spent maybe like 5€ per year on average on their service. I checked their calling rates to the U.S. and you'd pay half a dollar-cent per minute to call either landline or mobile number. The way it works is you open an account at their website, make a small deposit of 5 or 10$, download the DialNow app to your phone and you're ready to go. Obviously it is one way traffic only like that (they can't call you), but if people over in the US need to talk to you they could simply send an sms text asking you to call them. Sending an sms is generally not expensive at all.
