Rather a late reply, but this could be Anaplasma (a genus of tick-borne bacteria) - this is also transmissible to humans. The depletion of platelets is one result and the count can go very low - as many will know, this can lead to internal bleeding and possible death. Obviously it can also be a problem in external bleeding but that can be more easily dealt with.

From observing this in my own dog (happened in 2021), it is something to be aware of long-term and the frequent removal of ticks (plus, if possible, preventing the dog from mixing for long periods with other dogs of the roaming kind) is essential. I think the low platelet count might become chronic in some dogs (although not necessarily at dangerously low levels) and, as a precaution, I discourage anyone from feeding bones which may splinter and cause internal bleeding within the digestive system.

Thank you for the info. Glad to hear you got good results for your dog. A clinic in Sibulan is a big plus for us in avoiding the nightmare traffic of Dumaguete. It also looks like they have actual parking space! What a concept!
