If there is a long powercut, everyone must, of course, make their own decisions: But based on my knowledge and experience when power was cut for 3 days the last time: I treat the FREEZER as transforming in a FRIDGE and so did not throw away food too soon (the last time I threw away only ice cream). So food in the fridge has to evaluated (I have some things in my fridge which do not need to be there for preservation but because I like them cold, e.g. chocolate) - many items will still be okay in a few days. But any raw or cooked food I would eat asap (maybe I have to say that is after cooking the raw food!). The freezer will gradually be warming up - but by not keeping the door open too long (cold air, being heavier than the air within the room, will drop out) the temperature can stay near to fridge temperature for a while. Putting plastic bottles almost filled (i.e. allowing space for expansion of water > ice) in there before the powercut (enough time for them to freeze) will help maintain the low temperature (the additional ice will take additional heat from the freezer to change it back to water). So I would be cooking any raw meat in the freezer and then it can be cooled and go back in (now to fridge temperature, which can be okay for a few days). This all depends on factors such as the state of the food already present in the fridge/freezer, how full it is (I place bubble wrap to fill empty spaces), how often the doors are open, etc. That is why everyone has to make their own judgements.
Question - should one bring the washing in or not if such an incident occurs. Wet is OK but not the wife's smalls skyward bound as some here might get excited...
I probably should put this under funny stuff. At 1:44:20 into a live forecast of typhoon Uwan a question was posed, why are flights not canceled out of Manila? Quotes: 1:45:45 "where you going?" 1:46;05 "that guys getting his paycheck" 1:46:31 "you do you, I'm going to leave that one up" 1:48:20 "I don't want to be on that plane, turn that plane around!" 1:49:50 "They turned around? "They did turn around, they said nope!" "Who gave the clearance for this thing to take off in the first place". "I'm not taking the lord's name in vain here but, come on" "It's more fun in the Philippines, let's go for it"
