We are never to old to learn.
A couple of years ago we visited my wifes sister and her husband in Philadelphia, my first time in America, apart from a day trip over the Canada- American border.
Just prior to our return from JFK, my sister in law showed us around the New York tourist sight's ( or is that sites?) for a couple of days.
One of the places we visited was Brooklyn Bridge, it was part of a pleasant sunny day and plenty of visiters, like ourselves walking the bridge.
Not realizing the story behind the building of the bridge at that time, which would unfold some years later.
The Brooklyn Bridge was first conceived in 1867, designed by John Roebling. a creative engineer, who was told his idea wouldnt work, by bridge building experts.
John Roebling had a son, also an engineer, who he convinced his idea was possible.
John and his son Washington developed the concept, resolved the problems others had predicted, and put together a crew to build the bridge.
Sadly after only a few months due to a tragic accident on site John died!
Months later, again Washington his son was severly injured, and he was unable to talk or walk, but it didnt end there!
Everyone thought that the project would end there, since the father and son were the only ones who knew the dynamics of building the bridge.
Washington despite his inability, so wished to see the completion of the bridge.
While still lying in a hospital bed, he had an idea of how he could still communicate with his engineers, by tapping out a code on the arm of his wife, enabled him to tell them his instructions.
As a result of his determination, thirteen years later the bridge was built.

I have read on the bridge way back. You might enjoy reading up on his wife. I believe the story you read is an under emphasis of Emily Warren Roebling's conquering spirit in a time forty years before the 19th amendment confirmed women the right to vote. Thinking about the time period and a chief engineer duties for projects of this scale, I'm inclined to believe she deserves more credit than transferring his instructions for eleven years. A lot more.
