Why don't you do something about it? It is never too late to LEARN BISAYA. Join the next batch to meet on Aug. 3, 10:00 a.m., GRT Car Park (back of old Cang's). For inquiries, text 09186421670 or e-mail rarity45f@yahoo.com

I can't vouch for this instructor, but I have been learning Cebuano / Bisaya, since moving to the Philippines a number of years ago.

Here are some Cebuano Study Files that I host for free, for those interested in learning too. (Please feel free to save the link, as I may add other files later.) One of the files was written by Tom Marking, who I believe may be in Dumaguete?

Rarity54f, do you teach from a given manual? Or, if I may ask, how do you instruct your students? Is yours solely verbal, or do you also teach your students to read and write in Bisaya as well? Whenever I end up back in Dumaguete, I would like to visit your class, if okay with you?

    Thanks,

Hello Paul! Thanks for giving your comment to the post I made. Unfortunately, there are no manuals or whatever instructional materials existing for the formal study or instruction of Bisaya. I make my own instructional materials and I see to it that the students get exposed not only to the verbal aspect of learning the language, but that they also get to read Bisayan texts as well as translate short sentences from English to Visaya, vice versa. It is not easy to learn an entirely new language from print alone since the production of sounds is very important in the learning of this language which is very different from English. Much of the misunderstanding springs from the poor production of sounds. Learning to speak or understand Bisaya from print alone is much like learning how to swim from a book minus a real dip in the pool. Yes, you can come and be there on Aug. 3 I hope when I give the orientation.

If Rarity is the same lady who taught the class a few months ago, I can tell you, it is good value. She challenges you but makes it fun. If like me, most of your problems at home and outside stem from misunderstanding and poor communication you will benefit from this class. Be prepared to work at it. Just showing up for class won't get it.

    Hello Kenny...

Kenny, I think it's you and yes, it's me, the one who taught you a few months ago. I wish you could join next time. The new place is right behind old Cang's, at GRT Car Park. You notice there are DVD players for sale there, well, my place is right next to one of those. This is a lot better because you no longer have to climb stairs, but the number of people that it can accommodate is still limited to 10. Kumusta na?

If Rarity is Mrs. Fabillar, then she comes highly recommended by this contributor. She's a former English teacher from St. Paul, and for someone who's gone to Silliman, St. Paul and UP, I rank her in my top 5 shortlist of instructors who made an impact. Kudos Ma'm, you've come full circle with your grasp on languages, who would have thought your command of English would one day be beneficial to people who need/want to learn Bisaya?

Slightly off topic, but I have seen, albeit some time ago, material the Mormon's use for the missionaries on their arrival here. Looked pretty comprehensive, (except for a distinct lack of swear/rude words, which I personally, find very useful in everyday conversation.:D)
Will try to find out more about it as it would be a good reference source for teaching.
