    interesting.....

I've heard a lot of good things about the place but honestly, I haven't gone there yet. It is a fast-growing island I heard.

I just got back from Siquijor. Just a quick trip to check out a beach house for rent. Not much going on that I could see. We ate dinner at Samyz Pizza which is written up on this site and in guide books. Sorry no pizza." Next choice chicken stew. Sorry no Chicken stew. Finally beef stew. When it arrived It tasted and appeared suspiciously like Dinty Moore in the can and the serving was meager to say the least. The place had a general air of neglect, peeling paint half inch of dust on the outside tables no one attempted to clean off.
The island is beautiful but maybe fortunately doesn't seem to be heading down the Boracay path. I'll take the minor inconveniences to enjoy the laid-back atmosphere.

    San Juan, Siquijor

    Good day to all!

I'm Holly, the General manager and "crazy, german thing" guy from the only really Restaurant (Thank You) "Hollyette's Restaurant", former in San Juan, now transfered to Larena.

I don't complain really, but I have to say something to the situation in San Juan: when we started our business in November 2006 there were 3 Resorts with Restaurant operating. Now there are already 14 and only one has no own restaurant. Most of them concentrate on Backpackers and Budget tourists. Most Resorts are run by whilippino wifes, who have no or less education in handling intenational guests and their nneeds. They try to keep western style human to keep in the resort; even if they want to go out. And when they come back, it can happen, that sarkastic staff mentions:"...have you been at...?"

Another thing is, that the old business is dealing with the politicians: in my eyes the biggest mistake! The politicians are farmers, fisherman, trycycle- and multicab driver in San Juan; do I have more to write? In my education to a Hotel- and Restaurantmanager with specified cooking skills I have learned, that Business, Politics and Religion almost never fit together. My international experiences say the same.

Here in Larena we serve more local and international guests and earn almost more money after 2 month operating only as we could in San Juan.

If you want to invest on the island a business don't do it in San Juan! It's better to burn the investment money!

    Hi,
Holly I can relate to your business experience. I tried a couple businesses in Cebu years ago. I found I was better off going back to the States for a few years to put together enough money to come back and retire. This is a tough place to do business and make a living. I hope Larena works out for you. I'm looking forward to trying your restaurant when I'm back in Siquijor shortly.
