basically i makes more sense to learn Tagalog, unless you don't wanna go anywhere else than Dumaguete. Tagalog is mainly understood nationwide (even not spoken), It also depends on your family.
My GF speaks Waray and Tagalog since Birth, my little one Waray, Tagalog and English, so there is not much use for Visayan for me.
I rather focus on Tagalog, as I also travel a lot and Tagalog makes much more sense for that. i catch some visayan phrases or ask them, but I am not really intense after learning visayan.

    Thanx Rhoody.
    And if I don't want to travel a lot, besides 3 times a year to Cebu-city ?
Everywhere until now, I could manage very well allover the Philippines with my not perfect English. It just would be nice if I could understand the local people if I walk on the street and in the local bar/restaurant/shoppingcentre.

Just a pity for all my efforts and time if I understand Tagalog, but everybody around me is speaking a different language / dialect.

Correction, my asawa just told me, I am not allowed to go to any bar, so the problem is already a little bit smaller. :-)

well, if you only go to Cebu you miss basically everything about this lovely country.

Also if you speak "foreigner"Visayan you won't understand a lot when 2 or more casually talking.

Some important phrases are easy to catch (direction, numbers, insults) and can be used in daily life.

between not allowed and how to do things is a BIG difference, of course we can not discuss that in the public... hehe
