To be honest, for me this is the best area in the Philippines to live. I have traveled quite extensively in the Philippines, and my tastes and desires draw me to one place, Valencia. Dumaguete itself not so much, but it is part of the package.

However, no place is perfect, and one must enter into life here with that understanding. If one comes here with rosy glasses on, they are going to be greatly disappointed, I'm afraid. I have seen many come here with the attitude the OP dramatically tendered, and most of them are very disillusioned within months of their arrival. Most don't last, and are gone the first chance they get, never to be seen or heard from again.

    Just my opinion.

    Food

Now that's good news, as a retired restauranteur eating well is very important to me.
Like you I live in Thailand and visited AC & Cebu finding nothing approaching my idea of a good restaurant, my favorite in Pattaya is Casa Pascale does anything exist there that equals their quality? Coogle them for their menue.

OK, this is just a personal opinion, but, Le Chalet next to Why Not has some of the best food in the PI. And believe me guys, Ive eatin a lot of food in the PI.

You get the Chicken cor don blu and mashed potatoes and you have a plate full.

also the shrimp brushetta is a winning appetizer. ok points off for spelling...

I have eaten many, many meals there and have not had a bad one yet.

Anyone wanting to move to Dumaguete should rent for a year first before buying or building. I have been visiting and living on and off there for 26 years and it really can be dullsville if you enjoy city life. I'm allergic to peace and quiet so the Phils is ideal but i can only take 3 weeks to a month of dullsville and i'm looking for Cebu, Manila or Hong Kong.

Although we have a house in Duma, I reckon it's a nice place to visit but i can't live there full time. Part of the reason is the boulevard which should be vibrant and crowded with young locals has been taken over by geriatric expat alcoholics many with girlfriends young enough to be their grand daughter. What should be a major attraction has become a very ugly scene.

 I have to agree. life is for living and it must be lived within the means and ideals we strive for. We have to ask every now and then, WHAT? are we looking for. Answer that and we have some sort of answer.

Only Complaint I have about Dumaguete is that it needs to be on the West Coast so one can sit in Coco Amigos and watch the Sunset. Unfortunately it is not open for the sunrise :D
