In my travels around Luzon and the Visayas, I have come to believe that Dumaguete has more ex-pats PER CAPITA than any other place I have been. I am not even counting the Koreans, Iranians, and Indians.. just light skinned western people. One trip to Robinson's will confirm that theory. I have been to The Global City - a hub of expats in Manila - enough times in the last few months to come to this conclusion as even there I did not see too many foreigners as opposed to the population. The barangay I was in in Makati had exactly 3 foreigners living in it, including myself. What other places have some of you been to that have an ex-pat population similar to here?
Excellent observation! Nowhere in the Philippines, that I've been to or know of, has a similar or greater ratio of expats to Filipinos!
Dane, can you share what the Angeles foreigner population per capita is compared to Dgte? When I go to Angeles, I feel like I am of the majority.
Angeles City is quite big, but tourists normally only see a tiny fraction of the city. Try to venture downtown and you will seea totally different picture But yeah if you stick to Barangay Balibago and the major malls, then the foreigner / Filipino ratio is quite high.
It's hard to determine if a foreigner in a mall is an expat or a tourist. If it comes to expats (permanently living in the country)Cebu has a bigger expat population included all Asians. If it comes to percentage to the local population - not sure.
Why is Dumaguete a Mecca for expats? I have visited Dumaguete a couple of time, and it is a nice city, but why is it so popular with expats?
I've seen the ExPat population at least triple two fold since 2003, but I really wonder what it was like back when the Old Wise One "Ernst" arrived, I think close to 30 Years ago if I'm not mistaken....
