figs?

Surprised to read that figs grow around here. Wonder whether they are variety which does not do well in temporate area or what.

More I think about it is very surprising for store clerks do not know what figs are. Even referring to them as fruits often sold dry does not bring recognition; not even at the mentions of figgy pie or fig newtons is there any recognition. So how have you been able to grow them?

 

What I've seen of Fig trees, I would be more concerned about ants, as they are ant magnets.

 

Cure for slugs ... wood ashes and/or finely ground glass (powdered).

 

organic veggies... chicken

Hi all,

has anyone heard of anyone raising organic chickens... meaning that the chicken are fed organic food thus are a better tasting meat? Also... where is the best real organic market?

I have a garden at my house in the mountains above bacolod and put off plans to raise goats here because i wont be staying in the country..two friends of mine came to philippines and one is still here and the other left with no notice because he is old and both friends and i share symptoms of being weak and tired all the time and other symptoms like heart palpitations with fever symptoms and cough and respiratory heavyness got to my older friend thought he was having heart attack and left the country cause hes had heart attack and stroke before....Any way my older friend was making a garden too but could not finish it....My garden has mostly peppers whose seeds came from SM batch of groceries and the tomatoes came the same way and i bought the okra and greens from the hardwarestore seed rack...The stuff from SM or Robinsons mall just grow well with ordinary care routine and seems to be selected for big produce farm for low maintainance breed...Bell peppers cost more than meat by wieght so i save growing them by the bucket full...My carrots grow well but undersoil pest are more likely to ruin them but mostly its just part of the carrot thats bad and the rest cleans up fine if i use nothing to fight pest....Used organic neem oil this month.....I was in thailand for a month with out being here to keep garden going but my helpers weeded as they harvested for themselves and everything had just gotten big in just one month...I brought a hydroponic type powder fertilizer from USA not organic but safe...The powder is concentrate and good mix of nutrients and more,one small bag mixed over one hundred gallons of liquid nutrients for soil and foliage feed and my yeild looks bigger and better than the original market or grocery veggies the seeds came from...Above all ,picking the fruit and veggies when they are ripe and not before is the advantage of home garden in philippines....

 

Importing Seeds

Hello folks, just read this very interesting thread. I would also love to grow my own veggie once I'll retire and settle down in a few years time. One thing I would like to ask: is it legal to carry packaged seeds into the country? I guess one should declare it to the custom officer upon arrival else......cuttings are probably a no go area as they can carry pests. Please confirm.
I would love to grow fresh mint, rosemary, tomatoes, grapes, lemons, watermelons, melons......where do I stop?
Has anyone successfully planted any of the above?
I believe that watermelon love sandy soil, while grapes need a chalky soil, tomatoes and mint a nice composted soil, all of them with plenty water. Pots are a great idea, moving plants about would reduce over watering or sun damage.
Many of the plants are insect pollinated, here bees or bumble bees do the job, in the Phils I do not know, surely not termites ;-))
Some other plants are self pollinating while others need male and female flowers to fruit.
I'm not an expert by miles and I would like to learn from others experience....great thread!
