Aquaponics anyone?

Submersible or not? A recirculation pump for a filter or once in a while use for water changes? City Hardware had the best selection for pumps with data tags or at least the packaging readily available when I was there looking for pond pumps with a friend. If you are going to use it as a recirculation/filter pump beware that it will add a lot of heat to the water over time.

How many gallons/liters per hour do you need to pump for a tank that size?
There is an aquarium store around the corner from the police station. They have pumps. Don't know how big. Some of the hardware stores have pumps for different purposes. One of them might work? Try CITI. I've seen several different size pumps on display there.

 

Good question...as I have no idea which one I am going to use for aquaponics...can anybody here suggest which one is better for my project aquaponics?

I tried eating hydroponic veggies and they were beautiful, but absolutely tasteless.
Was it the balance/inbalance of chemicals or are they all like that?
I would like to sample some of the auquaphonic veggies sometime to see if they were any better.
Strawberries and tomatoes are what I would like a constant supply of.

I have a 40 cubic meter fish tank setup and I have been testing a small aquaponics setup using a small pump and a large wash basin. The media is mostly broken up bits of clay pottery and I have used a bit of coconut coir to wrap the roots of the plants in. I transplanted some bokchoy and it was doing great till the green worms got to it. I picked off the worms and the plants are recovering a bit. Since this is just a test I consider it a success since the plants wer growing. Not to sort out the Pest issues and figure out how to scale up the project.

I have yet to locate a good provider of coir and need to find the materials for making my own fiberglass grow beds, etc etc etc. I have instead been busy with other problems recently. I will get back to it soon.

This is one area I'm really keen on....love aquaculture - and aquaponics is getting more interest down here every year. You folks have ideal weather and conditions for growing barramundi in aquaponic setups. They are a fairly docile slow-moving fish, easy to grow, they like warm tropical conditions, taste superb (my personal favourite) - but do have high protein requirements for feeding. They are in river mouths and brackish areas of Negros (so I'm told) - they have a Filipino name that I'd have to research to find again. I heard some time back that fingerlings are available somewhere in the country. If anyone is interested I'll dig around and see if I can find out the source. I've been thinking about setting up down here (they are grown for six months and then...eaten - then the setup switches to trout for the winter) - or perhaps in Bacolod when I call it a day here....

Best source of information is from a Western Australia site called backyard aquaponics ,, join the forum there and you will get excellent info ,, yes free to join. Forum has a few to many nazist greenies but I can assure you the regular members how top knowledge on all things Aquaponic
