    Jack,
In order for it to stay in tune and function properly for the long haul, a wood framed piano needs to be in a climate controlled environment. I would readdress an electronic keyboard, given that it is completely portable, and with headphones, she will be able to play it at anytime, day or night. It also will not harbor termites! :D

yea, I was thinking the climate would reek havoc on an actual wooden piano. You could carefully monitor the humidity of the room it was kept in. Got curious so googled, I guess they are available...

    grand piano Philippines

Sounds to me you enjoy taking on challenges Jack, good luck! lol

in fact someone had one listed for sale here at the forum in 2008...

    "Piano for sale

Nice, real piano (not keyboard) Treble brand, purchased in Manila and shipped to Dumaguete. In great shape, recently serviced. Played often and kept in tune. Asking 30k pesos. Serious inquiries only. No, we cannot donate this. (We have been asked.)"

Dude, think about it man. Your "monster" wants to learn piano with the expressed interest of bashing it out on a real piano. Thats alot of cash to spend on a whim. Playing the piano isnt all that easy. It can be frustrating and boring, heck its freaking hard! I have been playing for years and I still suck mightily. I am just not smart enought to quit (as has been suggested by many).
Think electric and if your "monster" actually works at it and learns how to play then spend the big bucks.
There are touch sensitive boards with excellent piano samples, Yahama/Roland. You'd be surprised how hard it is to tell the difference between a good synth and a piano and it handles the humidity well, is portable and cheap and stores easily in the back of a closet if someone gives up.

PS. If your 'monster' can say NO and get a $10,000 piano may I apply for adoption? I can fit right in and you might love to have a 52 year old American son... as an added inducement, you can call me Buddy or Sport or Junior if you like.

my piano in tropical rainforest hawaii is a pearl river brand made in china bought in hawaii for 3000 US dollars and is among cheapest new ones can buy...It came with heater install inside and still after few years its key board is out of shape from moisture in the wood so i bought an electronic one with more bells and whistles and wieghted action keys for the same price as cheap piano except the electric piano is one of the more expensive and best quality....Although siliman music school has many wood pianos that stay in relative shape without heaters but the humidity determines if you get smooth key function or sticking key or two to make you sound less than fluid..

    All points taken!

 Thank You all for the replies, Nice to see that this Thread, has brought some good Points and humour. I have let our little monster (12) read your replies and she now tells me, that maybe it, was being just a Tad beyond a reality. Tunji & KDF, your inputs are ones, I would never have thought about here. She likes the post about an electric on being so close to the real thing. She asked if Mama & Papa could really Adopt a 52 year old  She said, DAD, I dont mind an elder brother BUT there is elder and old, Sorry relayer, out of mouths of babes here :D I will ask her again, if this is a FAD or if she really wants to do it. Certainly will be a challenge if she still wants to pursue it, let alone the out of tune practising on the Ear Drums. Bounty, you are right, I do tend to try and meet a challenge. I think she gets the idea now about my first thought, Electric Keyboard. Thank You all for the input.
Just as a side note, Where on earth would I find a Piano tuner in Dgte anyway?

I agree with the others. You can get a very nice Casio piano in Cebu at the mall. The less expensivenodel has a nicely weighted keyboard and sounds excellent. You can along watch the store across from the generic pharmacy on Dr V Locsin St. They are due for some used Japanese surplus later thus month. I was just in there yesterday and she said the 20th

    I don't know.
A moth ago I decided to learn playing keyboards too. But for me the MIDI keyboard seemed to be the best option for studying, because I have a program (eMedia Piano and Keyboard Method) it can trace what keys you press in what time and even how hard you press it. Then it shows all the mistakes so you can pay more attention to this parts of the song next time.

It is a good shop, only when the owner is there or at least his son. The ordinary staff knows nothing about keyboards even told different prices all the time. They are not interested in sales at all.
They had Roland PC-180 and the stuff told me it is 3500 pesos. I had to wait for the owner and bargain. From him I got this keyboard for 800 pesos only!)

there is a piano tuner with a sign on his shanty shack on the road to the airport going from siliman past the new Cangs building and so..Its on the left side of road if you are travelling towards sibulan.....Try musicians friends .com a mail order catalog in USA..all keyboards are way cheaper there even after shipping and buying voltage inverter.....I go to USA in july for a month, maybe i will buy a $100 or more keyboard and the same sell for twice the price with half the quality control in production...
