As some of you know, Rick's laptop "died," but we were able to save the files on his hard drive for transfer to his (not-yet-purchased) new laptop.

My question is this: Will programs (such as MS Office, Windows 7, downloaded programs, etc.) be available for transfer, or will it be just files/photos?

    Thanks!

Windows and Office must be reinstalled on the new computer (most comes with atleast Windows preinstalled) then it depends on what kind of program it is if it can be copied or if it has to be reinstalled.

If I were you I would reinstall everything to make sure everything is OK and as close to how stuff were before the crash as possible.

Thank you, we'll see what we can do. I know having Windows 7 installed on my desktop was an "extra" on top of the purchase price, but it may be a different story with a laptop - perhaps it's standard?

I havent buy any Laptop in Phil but the ones that are sold here (Sweden) always comes with some kind of Windows (or in some rare cases by demand, Linux) installed included in the price.

Always demand for a back up disk installer from the store you bought your laptop, it's your right. But with the Dell brand, a windows 7 or xp disk is part when you purchase the unit.

Operating systems such as win7 are normally standard unless you have upgraded from the asian STARTER edition of Windows 7?

You shouldnt have to pay for office either if you have kept your product ID when you purchased it. Just reinstall and reactivate.

Nope, you can't transfer working programs from one pc to another. You need to reinstall them all. All files can be transferred

sorry, i was referring to transferring already installed programs from one machine to another such as MS Office, etc...but of course, you can transfer downloaded programs/softwares and later install to another machine

KG, you can saved and transfer the .exe file (or downloaded installation-folder with the .exe) to different machines/hard-drives, but cant transfer already installed software. That would not work.
