Rents in the center of Dumaguete are very high and on some places (like the boulevard) are very hard to find. For starters perhaps just outside the center of Dumaguete, or an existing closed restaurant are the best option.
... but make sure you research why they closed... usually being rich and famous is none of the reasons
It depends on what kind of resto you want to open. There are cheaper franchises and I suggest that you go for one that appeals to the locales who, by nature, love to eat. We already have four branches of Jollibee stores here and having one more is just too much for such a tiny city.
Since Nov. 1, Mamia's restaurant, located @ Rizal Blvd has been closed, so maybe an excellent opportunity to start a new business.

a franchise is a rip off. you are still just working for THE MAN. they are the first to get paid and they dictate to you policy and price. if you want to be in business for yourself--- become an independent operator with a great concept/theme and the expertise to back it up. but be ready for 70-80 hour weeks and you must be able to handle your help ...later JL
I have to agree with guitarjohnjohn. Best is to say screw the franchise as its way to expensive and they dictate prices to you, dictate policy, and the first to get paid. With a franchise you can't "add" stuff to your menu as its their menu, you can't spce stuff up, you can't change anything. You simply manage their buisiness but your stuck with paying the bills. Better to open your own resteraunt with your own idea and theme. But like others have said rent in the center of Dumaguete is very expensive and you also need to consider electricity cost as well being very high especially if airconned. Find a place just outside downtown or edge of Dumaguete and rent can be a lot cheaper. Try and find a cooler area (shade and a breeze) and open air and electricitry can be a lot cheaper (but still expensive). Now you want to deside who you want to serve. You will NEED to have a decent filipino menu as no resteraunt can survive here without serving some filipino foods in my opinion. But beyond that do you want to serve foreigners as well, then what kind of food and can you realistically get a decent regular stock of the sorts of food you'd want to serve. Resteraunts ran and operated by foreigners tend to go very well.... as long as the foreigners keep their nose in it on a daily basis. But often the foreigner gets bored of micromanaging after a few months/years and the place goes to crap. So if your not willing to work 80 hours a week for the first 6 months and 60+ after that probably not the best idea.
business in the PI. If u want to work hard and make a lot of money in the fast food business and most other businesses as well, just live in the US> If u want to make a small fortune in the Phils, start with a large one!!! Ask me how i know!!!!:(
