How To Kill Mosquitos in Pond

There is a very small pond on our rental property and I think it is contributing to the mosquito problem in our house.

So I am reading up on how to rid the mosquito larvae the pond. The easiest way appears to be adding some sort of oil to the pond that will lie on the surface and smother larvae. I don`t want to bother aeriating the pond, there are no fish in it, and I`d rather not add any......

Ideas?

 

Have you considered adding small fish to the pond? they will eat the larvae. That is the solution I used here in the Pacific NorthWest for my pond---just bought "feeder goldfish" at Wal-Mart and put them in the pond. No mosquitos of any kind after that. Goldfish grew to be 6" to 8' before a heron or otter "cleaned me out'---good luck, Viper!

 

A light oil will work, but why contaminate the soil and groundwater with oil, when fish will work?

 

Because I have to then buy a pump to aeriate the pond for the fish?

 

There is no need to buy a pump unless you overstock it with fish.

 

Ok.. There were dead small fish in it when we moved in. Lots of algae/green. Which feeds the mozzy larvae I guess. Will the fish clean out the algae as well?

 

I recommend to use lime to reduce the surface tension of the water. Just sprinkle it on the surface of the water. That will drown the nymphs (pre-stadium of the the mosquito) which can't adhere to the surface of the water anymore. Its an environmentally friendly way.

 

Interesting. Is lime avail in town?

 

=> yes for Cebu, CDO, Metro Manila. I dont know much here but for sure there are... since its still PI

 

a lot depends on how big your pond is. also... some species of fish don't as much oxygen as others and some species, like tilapia, feed on algae. sounds like a research project but there must be a govt or university dept that can advise you.
