    Hello.

We are an American couple in our late 30's/early 40's. We have obtained our residency visa and are now looking for a quite piece of the tropics in which to slow down and enjoy more of life. We are quite adventureous and try to remain active. Snorkeling/scuba, caving (ametuers), golf, kayaking, cards, majhong, good food, and good friends are a few of our favorite things. We are looking forward to meeting other like-minded individuals/couples/groups.

We just arrived into Dumaguete today and have hotel accommodations. However, we are urgently seeking a short-term (month-to-month) rental in which we can settle in to the area before securing more permanent accommodations. Our short-term requirements are as follows:

    • Clean, Furnished house / Apartment / Condo
    • 1 bedroom / 1 bathroom / separate living room / furnished kitchen
    • AirCon with fans
    • Must have cable and internet available
    • Prefer all utilities (elect., water, cable, internet) inclusive of rent
    • Open to location, but needs be relatively quiet and safe. Prefer proximity to swimming white sand beach. General preference south of Dumaguete, but will consider all safe locales.
    • Prefer easy accessibly to public transportation
    • Preferred budget PHP10,000 - PHP15,000

We greatly welcome any suggestions and advice.

    Look forward to meeting you.

    Regards,
    Dan & Ivy

Hi, Dan & Ivy! Welcome to Dumaguete!

There are a number of short-term rentals (month-to-month) available -- have you checked out the "Classifieds" section here on DI?

My husband and I are also American - moved here in August 2009 and have loved it! Look forward to meeting you; please feel free to send me a PM (you might be required to have 10 posts before you can PM, I don't remember)...

[Note: You'll quickly learn to recognize and ignore the "Negative Nicks" that pop up here occasionally... ]

    Again, welcome!

    Sue

Welcome to Dumaguete, Dan and Ivy!! I am sure you will have no problems finding something that suits your needs. We also moved from the U.S. in 2009, like Rick and Sue. Good-luck and pm me if you need any help with anything. You will find everyone on DI most helpful and accommodating.

Welcome Dan & Ivy. Although My wife and I are still in Quezon City PI, we plan to retire to Valencia- Duma area soon. You will find many a friendly word on this board. I have come to enjoy the friendly and valuable advice I have read for months now. Some do get up on the wrong side of the mat at times, but that is the exception. Seasons Greetings

Many thanks to those who responded. We really look forward to meeting you all. Is there a regular expat meet-up in Duma? If not, could I suggest we coordinate a time and place for those interested to get together over a drink? I will PM as soon as I figure out how.

I am considering hiring a tricycle for the day to drive us around the area to get a feel for the different neighborhoods as well as look for 'for rent signs'. Would you think this is advisable? If so, how much should a tric cost for the day?

Firefly, Sounds like you think we are being unrealistic...can you please share your thoughts and elaborate a little as to why?

Again, thanks for the many welcomes.

    Dan & Ivy

    Hey DaGoodLife4
As you have noticed, I find it very unrealistic in finding the right spot in Dumaguete based on your requirements.
-forget about white-sand-beach in Dumaguete, you can find white sand some distance away but this places are certainly not cheap.
-forget about any real estate agency in finding a house or apartment for one month. The going rate for the agency is 1 month rent (so first month no income for the lessor)
-forget about finding a decent place including water, electricity, internet with aircon for a short period. Electricity is 10 p / kilowatt now and aircon consumes a lot of kilowatts / hour.
But you can find some places for short term rent.
Edelweiss Austrian pub on the road to Valencia has some short term rental.
At Natasha Homes (Black Pearl)between Dumaguete and Bacong you may find something,
Also Florentina homes on Rovira road in Bantayan has apartments for rent.
But expect to pay more than 15,000 pesos a month.
For long term rent in and around Dumaguete, it is quite possible to rent a nice place for 15,000 pesos but electricity and internet not included.
In fact I know about a nice fully furniced house for that price with 3 bedrooms, each one with split-type aircon, garage en covered terrace in Bacong available by February. (250 m from the highway)
For White beach, go to Dauin or better to Zamboanguita.

    Hi, Dan & Ivy --

A trike driver will gladly take you around for a day -- it's hard to say exactly how much that would be, but plan on at least P300 (and offer to buy him lunch/drinks, too - it's very appreciated and goes a long way). The price could be more -- others might have different figures. Even if it's P500, consider that's only $12.00 USD for the day - try that at home, LOL!

I would also suggest asking your hotel if they have any relationships with drivers. Also: If you find you have a friendly, enthusiastic driver (I have found many), don't hesitate to exchange cell #s with them. I have three or four stored in my mobile, and it's been great to text them in advance for an "off-hours" request. They have been delighted to help, I give them a nice tip for the convenience, etc.

    GOOD LUCK!

    Sue
