well, I certainly agree with Shadow's post above:

driving like most of those people here in Dumaguete is stupid, a helmet would not replace ignorance and idiots on the street.

Simple thing of "its a good idea" but when it comes to it its more like "except for me". They all act like its a great idea when its the other guy but when they are required to do it as well it becomes "its so hard and to much of a burden for my family" routine.

In further note my GF was telling me near NORSU yesterday evening their was an LTO checkpoint for 45 minutes or so and she said she saw a large number of motorcycles off to the side she said were to be impounded. She said she also saw a car or 2 but mainly motorcycles and LTO were checking lights and license's. She was only walking at the time so had time to take a look.

I think one of the reasons some local politicians (the late Perdices for one) oppose the usage of helmets are the motorcycle related crimes. Like people gunned down on the streets while the shooter drove by on a motorcycle (happened many times). Now, if all bikers are wearing helmets it will be harder to identify and apprehend the perpetrator among a horde of bikers.

well, most cover their head with cloths anyway, that makes absolutely no difference...

I certainly never heard that many lame arguments why a law should or should not be implemented, while it is for everybody knows, that it is only about bringing money into certain wallets.

There are so many laws which would make sense to implement (no drunk driving, without light, no texting etc.) that all police guys and whatever officers are involved would work 48 hours a day for weeks without even coming close to finish the task.

That would make the streets way more safer for everybody.. a helmet doesn't...

I agree with Rhoody's comments. Imho, helmets should be personal choice, like smoking for example. Whereas no taillights at night on the hiway is a death wish and a nightmare for the poor person that hits the bike. As mentioned, there are many other higher risk driving problems than no helmets. In fact, my concern if everyone wears helmets the lousy local drivers will fail to look when they turn even more so than they do now and will also turn into speeding cowboys thinking they cannot be hurt. I'm not sure what the answer is but with few if any checkpoints at night and still few putting mirrors back on their bikes either the province takes this s__t serious or let the chaos continue.
The key as I see it are you creating risk for yourself or to others?

Just seen two LTO guys riding slowly side by side, no helmets, no mirrors and one on temp plates that looked ten years old !!

Traffic Laws, so much more fun in the Philippines !!

One of the reasons I want to live in the Philippines is less restrictions as opposed to North America.
I am Red and don't like too many rules.
Helmets should be riders choice as it is in many states in the USA.
If the Philippines wants to compete with the rest of the world they could start by getting computers for Gov. agencies.
I am sure the helmet law will be unforced more on foreigners.

It is not about safety, or even real enforcement.

I went through a LTO check point about 1 last night south of the Mall. Since I ride that area almost nightly, and notice about 40% of the trikes and motorcycles do not have do not operating rear lights, brake lights, or both, I asked if they were checking for mirrors or brake lights. They responded "no," and I suggested no one was ever killed by not having a registration, but when the sugar cane trucks runs over a "dark" bike on the national hi way at night, there maybe some injuries. The Sugar cane trucks are on the hi way almost every night.

If they really want to apprehend offenders they would send someone down to check the 50 + motorcycles parked 100 meters down the road from the check point to be closed. Obviously it only a show and waste of time to really enforce the laws. Most of the checkpoints I have gone through (6) are located right outside the police outpost, allowing the officers to keep their coffee cups warm. The only people going through the check points are legal, or blind.
