I was wondering if anyone knew of a place that sold a self-propelled sugar cane harvester that you can walk behind. The GF in Tanjay has never heard of them and when I sent her a video of one she said they didn't have them in Tanjay. Thanks in advance! Shawn
We did use a team of carabao for the plowing; but I doubt we could teach them to cut the stalks for harvest.
Shawn, I was of course joking. I will ask my father-in-law if he has an idea where you might find one, he lives in the south where they do a lot of harvesting.
Pat...I took it as a joke. I do appreciate you asking around. Cutie...it over a month to plow, clear and plant so I honestly want things to work a bit more efficient at harvest. We will still hire a bunch of folks to gather and load. What I am looking for just cuts it and lays it off to the side (just like the workers but quicker). I'm new to sugar cane so I am learning as I go...
Shawn, not sure how accurate the following is, my father-in-law said it is all done with man power and bolos here, even the larger fields. Labor cost varies, I was told the people that haul the 'bunch' to the truck are paid more than the cutters. Reminds me when I used to pick beans, strawberries, and apples for a little money as a kid.
If I am not mistaken, even the very large/multi-hectare sugar cane farms are harvested by hand. The labor savings is in using a tractor to plow large areas, and prep the fields for planting. How many hectares are you wanting to grow? This will tell you if it is even cost effective to be mechanized versus hand labor.
There are a many guys from the mountain areas of Negros Oriental who are willing to do most any kind of labor. Somehow they are able to work all day under the scorching sun. The ones we have used for construction projects gave us an honest days hard work.
