Adoption attorney

A little update on the adoption case. After waiting several days for a reply to my letter to the attorney, and not receiving one, I filed a formal complaint with the Integrated Bar of the Philippines. They sent notice of my complaint to the attorney and requested that he reply within ten days. Two months passed, no reply. I received notice last week that a hearing would be held today between me, the attorney, and the chairman of the complaint committee. I showed up. The chairman showed up. The attorney didn't, but he sent another attorney on his behalf. Another meeting is scheduled for March 9th. I mentioned to the chairman that apparently I was not qualified to adopt a Filipino child as I am not married to a Filipino citizen. The chairman was surprised. No sh*t!

The adoption was supposed to be finalized (according to the attorney) by the end of April, 2011. He didn't even file the case until late in August!! Sheesh. And...................., for some reason, he was not qualified to submit the petition and had another attorney do it on his behalf? I wonder. Was this guy even a member of the bar? Was he practicing law without a license? If so, in the States, he would be guilty of a felony.

A foreigner can ADOPT a Filipino child under R.A. 8043, Philippine Republic Act No. 8043 (Inter-Country Adoption Act of 1995).

Because he is a lawyer, the payment you payed for him is considered acceptance fee and cannot be recover.

Adoption process takes time and expensive. (Not only 30k)

Such adoptions must be done through an accredited international adoption agency. Such adoptions are of children who are unknown to the adoptee until the adoption is complete, the agency chooses the child for you. The fees will run well into the tens of thousands of US dollars.

This avenue is not appealing to many.

Everything that involves legal matters is hard here in this country. That is why it is better to stay away from lawyers etc. that have anything to do with legalities.

 

Yes, much better to just hang around lawyers that do nothing legal!

The attorney has come to my home twice recently, asking me to explain the law to him!! Sheesh. He's indicated that he will reimburse me. I doubt it will ever happen. But I'm hoping.

A friend of mine retained the same guy to handle a different matter. Sales pitch was almost identical to what he used on me. And the results were the same, too. Said it could all be taken care of in three months. Been over a year and he's done nothing. I asked him to please submit a complaint to the Integrated Bar of the Philippines. If enough of us speak up, maybe we can get the guy disbarred????
