    Hello Everone,

I am currently in Dallas and my Filipina wife and me are moving to Duma permanently in 2014. I spent 2 weeks there in 2010 and really liked the area. I tend to like weather that is a little cooler than at sea level in the Phills and am looking for areas within maybe an hour of Duma that are at higher elevations(cooler). I spent time in Valancia and it is great, but a I want 3 or 4 hecters of land and Valencia has gotten to expensive.

On google earth I have seen some developed land with homes in the mountains above bacong, dauin, and siaton. Is anyone familiar with these areas? It looks like primarily farm land and that is what I am wanting. What would be the land prices in these mountainious areas? Is it safe for an expat to live in an isolated farm setting?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

    David

    David,
May I suggest that you not limit your search to only South of Dumaguete?
I live North of Dumaguete - some 23 klms - in Amlan. Land is far less expensive here, generally speaking, than land to the south of Duma...and there are mountains here as well. LOL!

I live only about 240 ft. above sea level on an inclined road going up into the mountains to Silab and beyond..I do not need air con.
There is land available around Silab. I also know of a fella who has some 3.5 hectares of sugar cane land further up in the mountains that is for sale. That area would be in between Silab and Pampolona.
Let me know if I can be of any more help.
    Don

Thanks for the great info Don. My main idea is to get high enough that AC is not needed and I am not hot all day. What do you think the per meter prices are in these areas you are taking about?

Silab in Amlan is a haven for the CPP/NPA insurgents. I say this because this is where my Dad and fellow soldiers were ambushed. That was way back in 1989.

There is nothing the NPA likes better than an isolated farm. My wife's family has land north west of Valencia that they cannot occupy full time because of the unpredictable NPA visits. It can be done it just depends on what your tolerance level for adventure is.

I haven't heard of the NPA bothering Yankees since the bases closed, their point of contention has more to do with agrarian reform issues here on Negros.
I know a fellow that does a lot of motorcycle riding in the very remotest parts of Negros and Cebu Islands who has run across NPA patrols on his rides.
They just let him pass by with no problems.

It is safe. Don't confuse the NPA here with the Muslim extremists of southern Mindanao. Whole different ball game, whole different set of rules and a whole different set of aims and intentions.

The NPA don't seem to have any problem with foreigners. I have come across them on numerous occassions in the more remote areas over the hill towards Sta. Catalina. I've stopped, chatted, shared a beer or a soft drink, and left candy and chocolate for their kids. It's always been smiles, handshakes, and friendly goodbye waves. I have never ever been threatened or felt intimidated and have never been asked for anything. I told them my name, but made a point of not asking for theirs !!! Now I only get stopped if they want to renew an aquaintance and say hello.

We're quite fortunate here on Negros Island as our communist guerrillas keep out the Islamic jihadists.
