Sorry to burst your bubble: - but I really have to laugh.

    1) You obviously don't know the local hinterland/lower class townie, male mentality very well...they'd bet on when the next coconut falls out of a tree, if they could make a buck. Just look at how many illegal cockfights there are on any given Sunday, example: - Barangay Bantayan, to name only one location. Do you honestly think the local 'piggies', don't know what's going on/been paid off? Dog fights? Why not? If they can make some money, do you honestly think that the type of people who'd organise this type of sh*t, would actually care about Animal Rights?

    2) Dog pound? Exactly who do you think actually runs this 'fabled institution', the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in the Philippines(DGT chapter), the City Veterinarian? The city government used to shoot dogs here, within city limits, but either ran out of budget for ammunition or political will, or were hit with so many cases of unlawful killing of 'pedigree askals', they stopped long ago.

    3) Ah yes, I'm sorry I forgot of course. The 'City of Gentle People', no problems with shabu, neither Bludz nor Crips, completely honest/drugfree pulis, no political assassinations of lawyers, or former beauty queens having affairs w/local bigwigs, or local businessmen/women, or NPA/RPA surrendees, CARP recepients, attempted murder of foreigners, etc. Certainly no guns for hire, absolute & complete compliance with central government law(helmets, vehicle equipment, traffic laws etc), complete self respect, respect for others and taking responsibility for one's own actions. Yes, I knew that city almost a quarter of a century ago, certainly not now.

Just my opinion, take it or leave it.

I'm an animal lover, I would rather see the idiots fight instead of the animals.

head to all the cockpits on any sunday and they are packed with people gambling and drinking. In dumaguete, the road in front of the cockpit is down to one lane as all the motorbike parking impede's on the road.

The same people that rode the bikes there to drink and gamble (and later drive drunk) are the same ones that don't want the helmet law enforced as it would have a financial hardship on them right?

Time would be better spent with those individuals suiting up by putting razors on their hands and having a fight to the death. Insanity for mental midgets

These dog fights do exist and you have to know the right people and have large amounts of money to attend. It's not like going to the cock fights, This is an underground set up like in the movie fight club. It is very rare for a foreignor to be allowed to view such dog fights because foreignors are known to make trouble. These dog fights are not only handled by poor uneducated filipinos, they are only pawns in the games. This is very well organized group men of power and money. I understand peoples feelings with animal rights because I am a pet owner myself. There are no animal rights in the Philippines from what I have observed, besides the Philippine government is too busy trying to fight to keep up with human rights and please the foreign governments so they can get their aid/money.

    And here's some news:

300 pitbulls rescued in Philippine police swoop - Yahoo! News Philippines

Philippine police rescued 300 badly injured pitbulls and arrested seven South Koreans after busting a massive online dog fighting syndicate, the head of the operation said Sunday.
Four Filipino caretakers were also taken in for questioning after the Friday raid at a two-hectare farm in the city of San Pablo just south of the capital Manila, Chief Inspector Renante Galang said.
"The dogs were in very bad shape. They were either sick or were wounded," Galang told AFP.
"This was a major online gambling syndicate in which they cruelly pitted the dogs against each other, sometimes to the death."
The dog fights were being broadcast online to a betting audience.
Galang said two of those arrested Friday had also been held in December after police busted a similar operation in a nearby province, when 240 dogs were rescued. The men had been released after posting bail.
Local animal rights group, the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), said a check on the animals showed that many were severely injured, with ripped ears and tongues, including 20 that needed to be euthanised.
PAWS programme director Anna Cabrera said her group was now coordinating with other agencies to try and rehabilitate the pitbulls, many of which had not been properly fed or sheltered.
She said many more could be put down if no help arrived.
"The government simply does not have a facility big enough to hold these animals," she said, adding that the pitbulls were bred for fighting and could not be placed together in a single cage.
She called on the government to overhaul its animal rights law that allows suspects to post bail of about $100 and go free while their cases moved through the country's notoriously slow court system.
A picture released by PAWS on its Facebook page showed one emaciated dog chained to a tree. In the background, steel drums were being used as dog kennels."

$100 for bail! Well, that'll show 'em!!!!! Sad testimony to a country that sets the fines so low it'll encourage this behavior

And it's going to get worse....the flavor of the month is breed pit bulls and sell the puppies for a profit, no records, no questions asked and certainly no microchip. This little bodied, huge jaws babies will inevitably fall into the hands of gangsters and being trained to be killers, just like in the western world. Never mind dog fights, I would not like getting mauled by one of this little babies. The authorities have to intervene to stop the unchecked proliferation of dangerous breeds or else........

Pit Bulls are not anymore dangerous than any other breed. More bites are recorded from the small rat dogs.....err lap dogs. It is all on the person who is raising the dog. Don't yo watch the dog whisperer? Lol

I agree with you although it is very unlike finding someone needing a skin graft after being bitten by a chihuahua :D
There have been quiet a few incidents were children were attacked by an apparently unprovoked pit bull.
In the Philippines, pit bulls are only bred for a few specific purposes...maim an intruder, dog fight or gang members status symbol, certainly not to carry your flip flops or newspaper. Once they got you tickling their tonsils, they won't let go unless you give them a good kick in the proverbial....forget about whispering LOL.
