Hi Folks. Anyone know where I can find an English Tutor. Angie wants to improve her English. Thanks. Paul.
Problem is Americans cannot spell correctly, must be from their fight for Independence from the British, and defiantly designed their own language - eg: Check instead of cheque meter instead of metre tire instead of tyre And there are others too numerous to mention :D:D:D:D Paul
Sorry Paul....at least half my workmates here in Perth now spell metre as meter...nearly everyone spells tyre as tire.... 'check' hasn't caught on yet (but it will). Australia's spelling and even accent are becoming Americanized. I have a foot on both sides of the pond (although Australia is home and proudly so)....grew up in the US...American father etc... I don't see this as a huge problema. Much as I admire the English heritage....and as much as I love England, the rural parts of England are some of the prettiest on the planet....the American culture is hard to combat here in Oz. ..and is especially so in the Philippines. You and your wife may as well accept it as it is. If your kids down the road are smart, grow up with the best education you can manage, have Australian passports, and the drive to succeed. Very likely their careers will be in the US or Australia. I hope you don't sentence them to a life in the Philippines. But a really good tutor who teaches the American way is definitely what you need....All the best mate.
i know of someone who works with me as a copyeditor and is willing to tutor part time...English major in college and knows what she is doing... 0927-716-1563... the name is zhary
ha ha ha ha ha ha:D Yes garbonza, I am quite aware of all that, and I was only joking anyway. In actual fact there are several basic forms of English - British, Scottish, Irish, Welsh, American and of course Australian...................:D The American movie industry and also their software industry has certainly influenced the way English spelling is done. I actually keep two Dictionaries - Collins and Webster. Now having said that, the American World influence my be short lived over the next century or so - WATCH OUT FOR THE CHINESE influence - America is already in hock to them up to their eyeballs - LOL - :D Remember what happened to the great Roman Empire. ? Oh,and please take it easy all the Americans here, I have very good American friends and we josh each other all the time about our differences, all in good fun. Also I do business with American companies. Have done so successfully for years, with excellent relationships. I am quite happy to have Angie taught by any Nationality who can speak good English, - American English or whatever. Paul.
You threw in the bait Pat, but I'm not going to bite on this one hehehe. Oh no. Not going to be drawn into it. Won't pass a comment, nothing to say on the subject, not rising to the challenge. Except that ................................ American English is an oxymoron, a bit like truthful politician, honest lawyer or celibate priest. If Angie wants to improve her English quickly then there would be no-one better than an English native, for whom pure English is their mother tongue. Of course, if she goes down the American route it will take considerably longer, as a lot of words are lengthened with an "isation". I mean, why only use one or two simple words, with a clear meaning, when a dozen can be used instead ? She can have an English chat, or an American engagement in constructional dialogue !! A simple English phone call (two syllables) can become a complicated American telephonic communication (nine syllables). And who on earth is responsible for putting the letter Y in the pronunciation of the word "figure" ? I don't know if there really are words like honor, labor, color and favoritisational, but if there were they would have the letter U in them. :p So I havn't got anything to say on the matter and will stay silent and keep my own counsel. :D
