That smoke from the ship looks like the same sh*t we get when a truck or Jeepney steps on the gas in front of us on our bike, but up close and personal and gross.
The engines in the Delta are Detroit Diesels which i am very familiar with,, they never smoke, sometimes a bit of a grey haze coming out of the engine when fully loaded, these are the same, i saw them overhauling an engine on the pier and they put garbage back into it that should have been thrown over the side to make an artificial reef.. To make a long story short i have never seen anywhere in the Filipino language where a reference to the word maintenance is found. Have you ever been onboard some of these sh*t piles and seen the little cans tied to various parts to catch fuel and oil leaks, when the can is full just dump it back into the oil sump or the fuel tank.. never mind that a proper repair would cost less than they are spending a month on unburnt fuel and what would it cost to have an engine room fire.????? O-|
andiflip, would you like to see a photo I have of the Delta Throwing it's soot and pollution all over Dumaguete?? They pull away from pier, leave all their pollution behind for us and our kids to breath. Completely irresponsible companies that don't deserve any of our business. They've already demonstrated they have zero respect for Dumaguete and it's people
Thank God for those Environmental Laws Thank God the Philippines has those new environmental laws so we all know we will be safe. I wonder if the LTO are going to enforce the laws like they do most laws around here...selectively, like in Helmet law threats.
On U.S. ships they do the same . Every boiler ship does this just not normaly so close to shore when possible . If they do not blow there stack there could be a big boom ! And then there would be allot of ship/fuel on the beach :(. I am sure this isn't a daily thing or there would be marches through the streets. Crew/Captain most likely had to do it to avoid more costly things that could accure by not doing it.
The Delta (multiple times a day) and the 2go are always like that... there might be marches, we just can't see them through the 2-stroke trike and sugar-cane truck smoke
It is a daily thing. In fact, Delta does it many times a day. And, nobody here stands up for anything....let alone march in streets. They just accept it. Just like all the roads with smoke belching vehicles and people standing on corners or trying to walk in their own neighborhoods with scarves or handkerchiefs covering their noses and mouths so they don't gag....
IMHO, the leaded gas still sold in the Philippines is equal or greater threat to human's and the enviornment. In the US, where lead had been blended with gasoline (primarily to boost octane levels) since the early 1920s, standards to phase out leaded gasoline were first implemented in 1973 — due in great part to studies conducted by Philip J. Landrigan. In 1995, leaded fuel accounted for only 0.6% of total gasoline sales and less than 2000 short tons (1814 t) of lead per year. From 1 January 1996, the Clean Air Act banned the sale of leaded fuel for use in on-road vehicles. Possession and use of leaded gasoline in a regular on-road vehicle now carries a maximum $10,000 fine in the US. However, fuel containing lead may continue to be sold for off-road uses, including aircraft, racing cars, farm equipment, and marine engines.[6] Similar bans in other countries have resulted in lowering levels of lead in people's bloodstreams.[7][8]
Grey haze my @ss. Perhaps you have not looked out to sea when the Delta was on it. You can see the cloud of black soot as soon as it leaves Siquijor. Larry
I believe that there has been a slight misunderstanding here, Detroit Diesels never usually should put out anything other than a grey smokey haze, IF properly maintained and regularly serviced as per manufacturer's specifications. Like Andiflip I too worked w/these engines for over 30 years, the only ones I saw that smoked like Delta (or maybe even the 2Go Ferry), were owned and badly neglected by 3rd world drilling companies like P.N.O.C.-E.D.D. As Andiflip also said, he saw Delta personnel 'overhaul' (joke) an engine on the pier (appropriate place to do so of course), who then put back parts that should have been thrown away, is it any wonder it smokes? I'm surprised it still runs, actually. The same is most probably true for the 2GO ferry, as it is an old Aboitiz Superferry with new paint. I'm sure longer term residents in this Province, already know that the reason why the Supercats stopped coming to Dumaguete, long ago. Manufacturers' recommended maintenance schedules, regular part replacement costs "ate up" Aboitiz for breakfast, which in part put the Philippine Airlines' 'Sunrisers' service (CEB-DGT-CEB flights) out of business, when the 'Cats' were introduced. Yep, Karma's almost as expensive a b*tch as proper & scheduled maintenance! You get what you pay for.....or don't, whichever may be the case.
