I read in yesterday's Daily Star, that, on June 16, Dumaguete, through its ENRO, will hold a city-wide clean-up activity. Many expats spend a considerable amount of time complaining about the filth in this city, especially through Dumaguete Info. Here is our chance to show our resolve by setting an example to others and joining the clean-up campaign. If any of you are interested, let me know, and I will get the details of the clean-up operation and we can set up our own group or join in with others that will be participating in the clean-up.

I don't expect a huge response because I am of the opinion that many prefer to sit and complain than actually do anything about the problems here (or elsewhere). Please prove me wrong and come out in force! By setting this example, we CAN make a difference! Please post back on this thread so everybody will be able to see the kind of response to this Post. Thanks.

    Count me in Steve,
I'll show up with a couple of boxes of new trash bags and I will do me best to have then filled with city trash. Is the city going to provide some way of picking up the "BAGES" trash?

Steve can you provide more details. I'm willing to join, but only if there's also more than enough interest from the locals. After all, it's their city, while I am here only as a guest and know how to behave accordingly thus not throwing any garbage on the ground. So in fact when I join I will clean what other people were too lazy to drop it in a garbage bin.

I am a firm believer in; Leading by example. When I started picking up trash on the street in my neighborhood, it wasn't long before I started seeing others doing the same. I'm hoping that if us expats show that we are willing to get down and dirty by picking up the public trash. Just maybe others will decide to "Not throw their trash just any where." Would it be nice to see Negros' public beaches and parks as clean as Japan's or Korea's! Just think of the bust to the tourist industry if that were to happen. Isn't good trash control worth it's weight in pesos?

it's a great noble effort. I'm sure the City Of Dumaguete is sponsoring the event. Where will the starting point be?

I'm guessing the city is providing trash bags, receptacles and trucks to haul the trash away? Cold Drinks?

Great opportunity to teach about recycling as well if this is organized. :-)

    You'll make a difference-for about a week...

I'm not cleaning up someone else's trash just to have uncaring people dirty everything again...

Since you are in Valencia, you can start by picking up the two bags of untagged trash someone left (must be a neighbor or someone they know) along my sideroad-not close enough to the hwy for the garbage truck to pick it up. Just east of Echoville, be my guest.

If you see that old man who sifts through people's garbage out for pickup on Thursdays in Junob, leaving debris everywhere, give him a lecture too. Head out well before 8:30am!

Or try patrolling the boulevard and scolding those who toss trash on the grass and in the ocean.

Otherwise people in jail for petty crimes should be put to work picking it up.

Suggest part of the team carries urinals of some sort and try and clean up that act as well.

So can we count you in on the next campaign of scrubbing the p*ss-stained, urine-soaked concrete walls across this city of gentle people?

I will never say that your approach will finally lead into a dead end road. Having said that, cleaning up some places will certainly give some satisfaction after the job has been done. However when the city doesn't give a follow up to maintain those places clear off rubbish by enforcement I am afraid that even the the same day a place like Rizal blvd will have the "garbage belt" look as usually. You may accuse me of being negative, yes I am. Though I've seen places (on Panay island) where a barangay was even more clean than the street in my home town. Asking why, the answer is simple the capitan of that particular barangay enforced it. Inhabitants who disregard this rule were fined or set on cleansing duty. It is as simple as it can be, so a great and challenging task for the city to fulfil.

I like your suggestion here. In California you see the dudes in orange uniforms picking up litter along the freeways and hiways. I'm not sure if that is working off their court sentence days or community service hours they have to put in as part of their court sentence but I like it. They are the lightweight criminals of course. Also, there are portable CRs towed at the sites so they don't p*ss on the road. Lessons learned for Dgte.
Note: The Bacong Market could also use a clean up program,I would pitch in for that one but doubt there will ever be an initiative.
