I'm in the market for a used car. (just getting too nervous riding the bike anymore) A lot of the ads say "No accident history" How do I check this. Not that Id think they'ed ever lie to me:D Kinda like a 4WD crew cab diesel PU with big tires manual trans. "Lady driven" yeah right!
wouldn't that be the ultimate argument NOT to buy the car (or ANY mechanical, electrical item, unless it is a vacuum cleaner of course )....
ok for the kilometres look at the odometer see if the numbers are up and down if so the reading has been altered, as for accident damage look for overspray, bog in the panels, use a magnet to see if there is bog unless they have used magnetised bog as they use in Australia, look for welds in inner panels or crinkles which means it’s had a crunch or two. Front tyre wear if it’s had a major crunch and not repaired well then the wheel alignment will be out permanently, if you are real keen look under the door trims look for damage of the panels, if it’s a manuel then see if the clutch shudders(the drivers here are a bit harsh on the clutch) if it releases almost at the top it’s worn out already. you can be lucky my fortuner is 1210 model with only 12,000km
If you don't know what to look for, or at, take along an experienced friend who knows what to look at.
Yes indeed, the car has only been under water for a few days during flooding in and around Manila a few years ago. Many cars coming from Manila have "flooding history"
The model year is very often and most likely mis-represented. First look at the little tag where the seat belt attaches to the floor. Unless someone went to the bother to change seat belts the manufacturing date is on that tag. Also, no matter what country the vehicle was made in the year of manufacture is part of the VIN number. Here they may also call it the chassis number. The year is in code which is standard except for a few countries, but you can find all that information on the Internet. Vehicle Identification Number - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia See this site. Buyer beware. Most used cars here I have seen have been re-painted, some because they all come here as white, some to hide Bondo and body putty, some to just give it a "new" look. Check the oil, smell the oil ( you should have someone familiar with that ) check the belts, check the hoses, check the coolant, look at the color of the inside of the tailpipe. The list goes on and on. If it has four different size and make of tires, I'd walk away. Look at the brake pedal, it is an indicator of how many kilomoters are on it, if it's an older car and has a new brake pedal, walk away. Look for wheel cylinder leaks or master cylinder leaks. Pay to have the wheels pulled and the brake wear checked. Have someone qualified to "listen "to the engine. Many cars have two oil filters(Diesels) and some gasoline engines have 2 fuel filters. Diesels have at least one large fuel filter/water separator. Drive behind the car, watch for dog tracking and smoke, blue smoke is bad. Whew, I am getting too old for this. What do I know anyhow ? I know I have missed many many things on this check list due to time constraints. If I continue I might miss my own funeral. I hate it when that happens. Best wishes, don't buy from the guy in the plaid suit or the driven by a little old lady only on Sundays to church or the bar. Beware of real low mileage, that is not necessarliy a good thing. Thanks for all the replies. I know buying a used car is like buying a pig in a poke but what can you do if you have limited funds. All i can do is roll the dice and take my chances. I've heard of a good mechanic here in Dauin and would certainly have him look if i bought here. I don't know anyone in Cebu.
Try a place called LYD Auto Sales , a small used car dealer next door to the High Point smoke test place on the east side of the National Highway. It think that is called North Daro. It's north past the Silliman Agriculture College a ways, not too far though. What I can tell you is that the owner Atty. Lloyd Elmaco is definitely a man of integrity. I bought a used car from him about a year and a half ago and he backed it up with a warranty 100% for 30 days and more. He fixed everything they might have missed. I cannot say one thing bad about him if I tried. Tell him that "Charlie" sent you, he'll remember me. But still take a qualified mechanic with you, it is very in expensive. You can call Dodong at 0920 841 9666. He is a very good general mechanic and specialist in air-con. Best wishes on your venture.
