Folks come there to walk before going to work or college it appears, or just us old retiree's enjoying the "view". Entry fee only P10. There is also an olympic size lap pool and diving pool I think that might be P20. Lockers available. More there at times. Check it out. We go about 5:00-6:00 a.m.. Nice way to start or finish the day if you don't have anything against being healthy. Check with your doctor or bartender before starting any exercise program. Please be advised that when attempting to walk at the above mentioned walking/running track that it is hovered over at times by the "walking the wrong way'" poliswoman. Now here's how our lovely 5:00 a.m. walk went the other morning at the convention center oval track. Please bear in mind there are NO events going on there, just mostly friendly walkers and a few joggers for the most part enjoying themselves. We were greeted in the usual very friendly, polite, smiling face and bubbly personality of the lady at the desk that takes the P10 each for the privelege of walking/running/ dancing/exercising/ on the walking/running track. God bless you whoever you are mam. As usual we pay our fee and with the nice lady's permission she tells us it is o.k. to walk in the opposite direction after my asawa explained the this woman of rare common sense that always going in the one counter clock-wise direction all left turns is, number one bad on your muscles, tendons, and so on to continuously day after day make only left turns. It will also wear out your shoes on one side only, plus it is boring. So, off we go having a lovely time walking clock-wise , all right turns, for 45 minutes not bothering a sole until the almighty, arrogant, pompous walking polis lady (?) one of the in-charge persons ( so she claimed) starts literally "YELLING" at us from up on the steps. "YOU ARE GOING THE WRONG WAY, QUIT THAT, YOU ARE GOING THE WRONG WAY" ! I thought there must be an accident somewhere or something she was in such a panic. So we stop our despicable act of walking "the wrong way" and walk up to the MOUTH and my asawa tries to get a word in that we were given "permission" to walk clock-wise. "BY WHO !" Still yelling. Nicely my asawa tells this in-charge that the lady at the desk gave us "permission". Oh the in-charge was furious to say the least. I asked her to wait just a minute, most people here cannot even drive on the right( correct) side of the road where people can be killed or injured and you are berating us for "walking the wrong way". Again she yells, "THOSE ARE THE RULES" I am a member here ! Oh la de dah. My asawa told her we paid to get in also. I left as I am not going to be in the middle of a cat fight. I politely thanked the great still smiling lady at the desk for being so helpful and kind and proceeded to our vehicle. Meanwhile my asawa stayed in the "ring" with the monster from the deep walking poliswoman in-charge trying to get her to listen to some common sense. Ah, to no avail. I am still feeling so guilty of breaking the " rule" which by the way is not posted anywhere as my asawa told her also. No signs on the entrance to the track indicating one way. Oh the humanity of it all, we are fortunate I guess that we were not arrested by the walking polis lady(?) or caned. We do apologize to all the people on the track or in the area for causing such a stir. We deeply regret our transgression. We are now considering therapy to conform to the robotic narrow mindedness that appears to prevail at this public facility. Again we do apologize. Mr. Mayor or Mr. Governor if you should read this please promote the gracious lady that takes the money at the desk to be the head in-charge person. Not only does she posess a rare quality of common sense, and the ability to think "out-side the box", but she has always gone out of her way to help us in anyway possible, is friendly, very courteous, smiling, polite, and a true thinker. You have a jewel there and we pray she is recognized as such. We would also like to acknowledge the "dancing" lady that is there almost every morning we "used to be ", and dances as well as walks, jogs and whatever. We truly hope she is not also thrown out for "dancing" without a permit" or whatever on a walking/running track. Whoever you are dancing lady you do your thing, it is (was) so nice to see someone like you not afraid to do your own thing, not hurting a sole. If you see us in town before we see you, please do say hello as we would be honored to shake your hand. Perhaps on non-event days it can be rotated so that one day we go the the right, the next day to the left, and so on. Dance like no one is watching, smile as every day may be your last, enjoy life. Thank you & God Bless
How do they pick the rules to enforce? It is hard to know what is going to be enforced in this community and what is not. Of all the written rules this city has, it is unique to have this "unwritten" rule about which direction to walk on the track enforced. The difficulty I face in trying to adapt to living here is to understand what rules are enforced within this city. There are national laws which this city may enforece (or most likely does not enforce) that are national rules. Last Tuesday the The Viscayan Daily Star noted that 168 motorcyle drivers were arrested for having minors as passengers on Bacolad. By looking at the motorcycle rides in this town I would have never known that rule existed. I always smile when I see a 2-3 year old child with the wind blowing in their hair with a big smile on their face as they ride on the father''s gas tank....of course I do not want to see what happens when there is an accident in such a case. This minor passenger rule is just one example that goes along with mirror, and lighting on motorcycles...rules that are ignored. Like many others I will be looking forward to seeing Dumaguete's implementation of the helmet law. If any one see the first check point, let me know. I really want to watch and video record how this all goes down. My Phil-American landlord says just tell them you can not get to your job or you don't have money for a helmet (most likely true) and Dumaguete policemen will let you go. When I went to the DTI office they showed me the inventory of all the approved helmets forsale in town...looked to be about 800. I do not personally think that is enough for all the people riding without helps. The lady at DTI told me to just wait because she was not sure the law would be enforced. That was approximately a month ago. My landlord also said Bacolad has a long history of enforcing the laws, and the excuses do not hold up there.
Laws, rules. helmets. Personally I am against a mandatory helmet law. I am originally somewhat from Michigan in the U.S.A.. Michigan just re-pealed their helmet law about one month ago. You cannot legislate common sense or safety. It may be taught, some will get it, some wil not. Natures way of weeding out the weak stock. Helmets to the manufacturers, distributors, and stores, are a good thing and they will make untold billions of peso's off this law. Then like Michigan it will eventually be repealed. Oh boy, more plastic and harrardous materials to deal with. See note below about the no burning law. Motorcycle riders now seldom look before pulling out or merging with the current traffic flow. Put a brain bucket on their head leaving them a false sense of security and obstructing their view, not to mention what the heat is doing to the brain in that toaster oven and the ability to think they will be having more crashes, not less. I have to wear a seat belt in a vehicle, what about motorcycles ? Maybe the next step will be air-bags and seat belts on motorcycles ? I used to ride, but no more. They are inherently more dangerous than a car/truck. Ride at your own risk. That should be a matter of personal choice as a human being. I agree there needs to be an age limit for a child to be on a motorcycle. and the number of passengers. Will any laws be enforced ? Probably not until the son, daughter, wife, or husband of someone of so called importance is killed or crippled. I spent all last night Googling laws and or ordinances for Dumaguete just to see what they are. I had very little success. I am told by a very high up source there is an ordinance against burning in Dumaguete, What exactly it says I have no idea. O-| But, it is what it is here, it may change, it may not. I accept that, sort of. By the way Michigan law says motorcycle riders must have a certain bottom line amount of insurance. Use up your medical portion and you die. Simple. it is a choice. I lived in San Diego California for a year and the insurance companies there would not pay anything if you were in a crash and were not wearing a seat belt. Makes sense to me, but it is still a choice. Life is a disease, it has killed many people I have known. It is only a matter of when. Have a fantastic day.
A hot head situation You bring up a great point about the heat build up in the head by the use of helmets. I was at an auto racing seminar regarding safety. It was brought up that for every single degree you head heats up, you reaction time drops significantly (obviously my head is so hot now I can not remember the exact percentage, but 50% hangs in my head...I am open for correction on that percentage). That is why the safety people are not endorsing the foam neck collars as much as they use to because they stop the heat loss in the veins on the perimeter of the neck that go to the brain. They said those veins located on the outside of the neck are part of our cooling system, an particularly affect the temperature of the head and brain. I was not endorsing the helmet law, just interested in how the implementation will really happen. It should be quite a circus to watch. The more I get use to the culture here, the more I question the helmet law.
If there are others on the oval track, I think you should walk in the same direction as everyone else. Not because it's 'the rule' but because it just works better that way. I don't buy the sore muscles and worn out shoes from left turns idea. But that's just my opinion. Maybe I'm from a different part of MI than you. I don't wear a helmet, but I know I should. Discussions about the supposed benefits of not wearing one though are kind of absurd. An old adage about wearing seatbelts used to be: "Would you run as fast as you could into the side of your house and expect that putting your arms out in front of you would save you from injury?" That's only maybe 15mph if you're a fast runner.. Same thing for your head and helmets.
I think I know you. I have no idea where in Michigan you are from but I can make a pretty fair guess. Liberal bleeding-heart Democrat ring a bell ? It is written all over you. But that's o.k., your choice. I fought for Freedom all my life and continue to do so. You certainly have a right to your opinion. What branch of the military did you serve in again ? By the way , seat belts, air-bags, side door crash re-inforcement do nothing but give drivers a false sense of security so they drive even faster. And the manufactures, lobbyists, distributors, stores, of such junk get mega wealthy for no reason. I lived through the 40's, 50's 60's with none of that garbage and amazingly I am still alive today. Isn't that odd ? I drove 50,000 miles per year for 51 years there and in other states also in my job as a regional sales manager. How did I ever do that with no college either ? Gosh, I must just be one lucky Joe. Have a great day, enjoy life while you can.
I agree with your scientific knowledge about temperature can effect reaction times, but i do not believe there is any temperature rise in a vacuum, please correct me if I'm wrong.O-|
