With ANY device that has an internal rechargeable battery, it pays to check them often! There is no such thing as "maintenance free". All batteries eventually require some form of maintenance even if that maintenance is throwing it out and getting another one! The UPS in the article is not to blame, it is the battery manufacturer, if anything. APC is the largest manufacturer of UPS's in the world and sells more than 10,000 units a year. One can expect a failure or two when dealing with those kinds of numbers. It is one of the few electronic devices that is NOT made in China, as it is made in India. I use one by this company and have not had any problems with it. The battery even came with a 5 year world-wide warranty! http://www.apc.com/site/products/index.cfm
Laptops, phones and tablets have also gone up in smoke, should we abandon them? APC is the corporate standard, also sold under IBM and HP labels. Never had this problem with them during a career in IT, perhaps because they were made in the PHILIPPINES.
