Reluctantly. It depends how complex your return will be. ie. Stocks, dividends, property sale, business income, etc. If a simple return, all the forms are online and your husband can do it. There are U.S. tax consultants that will prepare your return for you and you work with them online and then they email the final docs for you to sign, but they are quite expensive. There are also software packages you can buy that simplify the process as well. I would purchase one of those before you come over here. Doing your own taxes is really not as difficult as it may seem to be. Your finanicial institutions send you end of the year statements with all the information you need, and you can use last year's return as a guide.
I give my accountant the figures via email and he plugs them all in for me and emails me the return with two E-file documents. I print and sign the 2 e-file docs at an internet cafe. they scan it and email it to me and I forward the signed doc onto his email. That's it...and it's done.... Total time at internet cafe wasn't 10 minutes.
Fantastic! We usually have ours done on base for free but turbo tax maybe a good investment before coming over. Thanks!
If you do not have earned income in the Philippines, you are not required to pay taxes here. So if your income is from the US only, no taxes to pay here. If your husband is working here for an international company, the company and your husband would be required to file a Philippines tax return and he would be required to have a PI work permit.
That makes good sense. And no, we won't be working at all while in PI. Hubby is retired for 3 years now and been enjoying his retirement for 3 years also ;-) Thanks for this info PatO.
