    Hi all,

    I recently moved to Dumaguete from Canada and applied for "Non-resident" Status to the Canadian Revenue Agency via an NR73, Determination of Residency Status (Leaving Canada). My request was denied because I am "... not considered a resident of another country and (I am) not subject to income tax on (my) world income in another country." Since I am receiving a military pension from the Canadian government and since I still have Retirement Savings (RRSP's) in Canada, I would obviously like to reduce my income tax!

    I am considering the SRR Visa to become a "Resident" here in the Philippines, and then reporting my "World Income" to the Philippine government if the international tax rate is lower (after consulting with a good accountant, of course) before resubmitting the NR73. I imagine that the tax rate in the Philippines on foreign income is lower than the domestic rate in Canada. However, I was wondering if any of you have had a similar experiences with the NR-73 request and if you would have any advice on obtaining non-resident status in Canada?

    Thanks in advance,

    Stephen

    Hi Stephen;
    I think you have to be a permanent resident in the Philippines first before you can apply for a non-resident status in Canada. My Dad returned to the Philippines last year for good after 20 years in Vancouver and able to qualify his old age security pension under the reciprocal agreement between Philippines and Canada.He did file his non-resident income tax return this year.

    Steve, try this forum PRA European and American association - Index which is especially made for people with a SRRV visa but you can put there any of the questions on this forum for American-European SRRV memebers or potential members.

    Hi Steve,

    Finally did you obtain your non residency status. I am wondering if it will be the same for me.

    Nope, I never got it and never applied again. I got married here, got my 13A, Permanent Resident Visa, but I since learned that I can claim my wife and her two children as dependents on my income tax so I end up paying less than the 25% flat tax charged to non-residents of Canada and get about $3,400 return on my income tax, plus I get a GST return 3 times a year because I am so poor, haha. I still am not taxed on my "world income" in another country (as required to be considered as a non-resident) so I do not plan to apply again unless I can find out if I can somehow reduce my income tax rate. Now, I did hear that I could possibly reduce that rate to 0% if I was paying income tax in another country but the Philippines does not tax pension income.... yet!

    Thanks, for the reply. I tried to get in touch with you by txt couple days ago with the phone number you posted in another thread. I guess it`s not valid anymore. I am already retired from military and looking to move there with my wife. She`s from Sibulan. I saw your house project and would like to gather more infos about house construction. If possible, can we communicate each other using a easier way.

    Mario
