That "local cheese" is interesting. I wonder what that is.

Tell me where to get 6mbps Internet in PH for 1,000 PHP?

Great post! I'm sure the overall figures are "close" to accurate, but some aren't. I promise that grocery prices are much more than 19.22% higher in Los Angeles than Cebu. Heck, grocery prices are, on average, are 20% higher in L.A. than Orange County which is only an hour or so away!

Althow I realize there are cheaper places to live in the U.S. than LA, It's a real reality check for a guy like me that hasn't set foot on U.S. soil in 18 years. Thanks for the post.

This kind of comparison serves those who want to be served.
In the US you have discounters like Walmart, Food4Less, 99c only, Ross etc where you can buy groceries or clothes at a lower price than the Philippines.
Also the weekly promotions are not available in the Philippines.

China imports are cheaper in the US sometimes.

The interesting aspect is most of those item are made in our neighboring Asian countries, and actually cost less at the discount store in the US than they do in some of the dusty stores here. I could never figure out how shipping costs were lower to the US than to the Philippines from China.

I particularly found it interesting that some of items I purchased in the US and shipped to the Philippines had more miles on them than I have days in my life. I hope to live long enough to reverse that trend.... maybe I better stop riding a motorcycle around Dumaguete

    What about manufacturer coupons?
What about purchasing via ebay or amazon and being able to have items shipped directly to your home, reliably and they actually arrive?
What about customer service desks where you walk in and can get your money back - no questions asked?
What about the value menu's at every fast food chain where they have 99cent burger specials nearly every single day of the week?
What about 30meg internet lines for $29.95 a month. Verizon and Charter have it, and I've got it at my property in So Cal. For $69.95 I can have Verizon FIOS line which is 300 meg internet line.
What about the very basic, minimal expectations, of customer service?

I spend 4-6 weeks a year in the states and don't find the price list above accurate. But, I'm not the average shopper either. I study prices, know where to buy and I don't pay anywhere near what the Los Angeles price list indicated. Could make all the difference. I go on groupon.com and buy my $25 Starbucks gift cards for $8, just as i did last week. Yes, I go to Starbucks all the time, and drink/eat at 60% off. Their $1.79 coffee actually costs me .68 US cents. Just one example of many.

Every year i go home I end up with 2-3 massive balikbayan boxed chuck full of goods I ship over here. Some of the the items inside I simply can't get at all here in the Philippines. Others, I can get here but at 4x the cost. And Electronic items are WAY over the top here in Philippines. Nearly every single foreigner I know does all their bigger ticket shopping in the states and brings it all here to PI with them.

Why is it we don't see people buying up all the bargains here in the Philippines and shipping them OUT to their home countries? If it's so cheap, and there's so many foreigners here itching to make a peso, why aren't they doing it? It would seem a simple solution for those wanting to make money. Most of us take our luggage on the plane to the states and it's empty. Coming back, it's full. Why? When is the last time someone knew you were going stateside and they asked you to take some items for them? On the opposite, everyone sure has a list of things they need and want you to pickup, put in your luggage and bring back to them here.

In reality, the things that are cheap in the Philippines are Cigarettes, Booze and labor related items like maids, manicures, pedicures, massages, A hospital/doctors visit (without insurance, that could bankrupt you in the states), ummmm and "nightlife". :-) The prices here in Philippines are great for that.
