It is really unbelievable how they drive here. Yesterday I broke out laughing while riding in the front seat of a PUJ so astonishing was the driving.

But the interesting thing is when I was in the States there were tons of accidents almost every day I saw own, often serious with injuries.
In several months here, I have seen only 1-2 minor fender benders here in Dumag and in Cebu. They are actually very good drivers at least along the Dumag. Natl Hiwy. IF you judge by the number of accidents I have seen in regular jeepney; trike trips. They actually pay attention to their driving, because they HAVE to. None of the idiots from back home with their heads up their a**es with cell phones. I have to hand it to them, they are good drivers who follow no rules except the one that really counts-don't hit anyone. Also I do not see tax collectors (pigs) everywhere wanting to fufill their monthly quota with the multitude of laws and sh*t traffic courts to fine you and cause you considerable problems/inconveniences. Here I can probably handle any infraction at the point it occurs and it will be considerably cheaper. My comments only apply to day time driving, have not been on the roads much at night.

Philippinos are good drivers, but terrible motorists.

They don’t drive they only steer, if they were to do the speeds we are allowed to back home then there would be probably hundreds of motorists involved in one accident, I drive on the main drag every morning at 7am taking kids to school absutly unbelievable every morning I have to avoid at least one accident if it was not for my capabilities then there would be a deaden every morning. The most attention they pay is to their cp or to saying hi to friends as they steer.

    Huh??

Sorry pal, you must be way off with consensus with your statement as to where is safer to drive & who are the better/smarter drivers.

Just exactly what part of US are you talking about?

Perhaps an accidental statistic fact check is in order.

Pedestrains trust of driver is amazing

I have a tendency to disagree on the number of accidents. The injuries are more severe because the vehicles weight more and are usually going about 5 to 10 times the speed of vehicles here. But the number of incidents are lower in my opinion per miles driven.

The pedestrians seem to trust the drivers here, more than they deserve to be trusted. I have been here over a year, and I think I have seen more pedestrians hit than dogs. I think that is because the dogs pay attention to moving vehicles, while the pedestrians seem to ignore them... it does not always happen that way as the pedestrians step out from behind slow or non-moving vehicles and get smacked. Of course the pedestrian is always right so it is no problem unless they are "dead" right. To be factual, I saw a young lady's limp hanging body in in a man's arms as he through up, on the Dumga. National Hiway, just before Christmas after she was apparently hit by a large van, at dusk when everyone plays in the street. It was a hard sight, and stayed in my mind for days. However it is easy to explain if you watch the pedestrian interaction with the vehicles around town. The drivers do not drive and the pedestrians do not look. Watch the number of pedestrians looking in one direction as they look in another.... they practice this technique while they walk around the Robinson Mall so they can use it on the streets.

The majority of people can't afford Holy Child or Siliman hospital.
Spend 1 hour at the entrance of Provincial hospital, day or night and your tendency of disagree will change in an agree++.

    Catch them if you can.

Hello again. I am sure all of us have ideas of how to curb the people who continue to get away with reckless driving and speeding with no care. Where are the the radar guns? Get these people where it hurts. Ticket them. If they either can't pay the fine or don't have a registration or license impound the wheels. Yes I know alot of people are short of funds but them think when they are on the roads, streetsand highway. Thats my view.

I think we are in agreement, but maybe need to communicate more clearer. I think I should have added a few more words to my post:

"But the number of incidents are lower in my opinion per miles driven" in the US.

I think we are in agreement that they are less accidents per mile in the USA. I would certainly think the number of accidents involving pedestrians would have to be lower. I have pedestrian accidents walking around the Robinson Mall. The Accidents are more spectacular in the US because of speeds and vehicle weights. Sometimes the accidents are noteworthy here because they involve a bus, or a dump truck loaded with passengers in the back.

This is the one area I have serious criticism of the drivers here. There is no presumed right of way for pedestrians here and the drivers frequently ignore pedestrians. My statement on the number of vehicle accidents stands-way more in my USA city of a million plus. And they drive faster, but not 4-5 times faster as one poster said. I am talking on city streets in USA but I also have seen no accidents here on the Highway yet-I am sure I will eventually. I think USA drivers are among the worst and I have lived in about 6 different large cities and spent extended times in about a dozen others. They seem particularily bad in sunbelt cities or places where people move, where there are a large percentage of drunks, druggies, senior citizens and dysfunctional (irresponsible) people.

I suppose I would tend to agree with all those criticizing drivers here if I did alot of driving here, since that is where the source of the complaints comes really; there seems to be an underlying anti-filipino tone to many of them which I do not share at this time. To me driving yourself is not worth it here when you consider: a) hassles with bureaucracies/cops b)insurance c) cost of maintaining vehicle along with dealing with mechanics d) need to sell the vehicle when leaving and most of all e)stress of driving here However, I would be less than honest if I did not say that injury during accident here is a big worry. If you get hit in a PUJ/trike, you are likely to be seriously injured or dead is my guess coupled with the lousy medical care.

No, I am not going to spend the time researching and debating statistical info, no time for that. I still think the drivers here are good, except their treatment of pedestrians, experienced a number of jacka**ses in that regard.
