It only clarifies that you are out of touch. Bottom line? Poor people are no more entitled to litter than anyone else. It doesn't cost anything to put trash in the proper place. Rhoody hit the nail on the head; there are people in many poorer countries who don't foul their living areas with their discarded trash.
First of all, spending one’s time in fancy restaurants on the Boulevard does not constitute being «in touch » with reality. Sure, I may not have lived in the Philippines for as long as you apparently have, but I happen to speak the local language fluently which opens doors for me that a foreigner may not otherwise venture into. This, in turn, makes me privy to conversations that are never spoken of in front of foreigners. So, if I may say so, I do believe that I have a certain grasp of the realities in the Philippines. Secondly, it would be interesting to see this so-called list of yours regarding poorer nations who do not wallow in their own filth. If you were to find one or two such countries, these would be the exception to the rule. And picture-perfect postcards churned out for the tourism industry do not count. Having said that, I do agree with you that it doesn’t cost anything to throw trash into its proper receptacle. Don’t get me wrong; I enjoy pure air and a clean environment as much as the next guy. It does not in any way mean that I condone irresponsible and disrespectful behavior. It’s just that, in terms of priorities for a country on a very limited budget, trash does not compare to other more pressing problems such as unemployment and hunger. What I was trying to point out in my previous post is that Maslow’s theory helps explain why this apathy exists in the Philippines and many other poor nations for ideals and attitudes that Westerners would consider to be only “normal” behavior. If you were not able to read between the lines, what I was implying is that instead of simply bitching and moaning and whining about the state of things, that perhaps we, as intelligent beings, should try to look at the root causes of problems to try to understand why things are as they are. To find the cure, you have to go to the source. A country’s economic standard must first be raised before one can expect the population to embrace other causes such as saving the planet, humane treatment of animals, child labor laws, the helmet laws, etc., etc. Otherwise, you just have a bunch of ineffectual laws that get broken left and right. One only has to study the economic and social history of the United States and other European nations to see that this is true. Each country has to go through the various stages of development in its own time. Many Asian and African nations are decades away in this regard. If they weren’t, they wouldn’t exactly be affordable places for retired expatriates on a limited budget to live in, that I promise you. Do you personally know of anyone retiring in Japan or Singapore? One case in point: China is notorious for its human rights violations, inhumane treatment of animals, and pollution, to name a few. However, as their standard of living increases (due to a flourishing trade and proper economic management), there is now a growing awareness of certain issues that would not have been possible 10 years ago. It won’t be long before they, themselves, have their own green movements and PETA demonstrations in the streets. I could go on and on but the forum is not the place for a thesis. Besides, it would be pointless and a complete waste of time. For when someone is dead-set on espousing his own ignorant convictions to the bitter end, no amount of scientific and statistical data will convince him otherwise. Attacking a theory by saying that it is “a bunch of crap” is not exactly an educated and intelligent rebuttal. You are entitled to your own hard-earned opinions, and so am I. We could go back and forth like this much to the amusement of our fellow members, I’m sure. So let’s just end it at that. By the way, I did think your signature had a really nice ring to it; it sounded so enlightened. Who? and why? Who is or what branch of the city is in charge of trash at Sil beach. Not only do I see broken glass,medicine bottles and assorted trash sticking up from the sand but also I have witnessed when walking at dawn there a hole or pit that was made and seeing the person rake some of the trash not all in then covered as if that is that and why is it they the trashadores can not also take glass. For weeks since as far back as June the pile of bottles from the local drinkers of the adult beverages have been piled and even bagged and still they will not put it in the truck.
i sometimes think the littering here is a genarational thing... when i was in grade school in the USA...there was a big push to stop littering the theachers talked about it alot ....many public service ads on tv...and the reasons where that people threw thier trash everywhere....it took along time to teach folks not to litter.....
