While out and about today I did notice more people wearing "helmets" if you can call some of them that. I guess only the ones with something to lose wear a "good" one? :D

"GOOD" ones are not legal (not on their list of "approved" helmets), only the cheap China crap is legal.

thats the funny part for letting the officers look for icc instead of the actual safety standard stickers, sigh.

also what's out of place is people try to buy helmets that at least look like they're actually for motorcycle use, while most of the 'uniformed' guys iv'e seen riding around with their semi-automatic rifles are with skateboard and bicycle helmets. how i wish their office would give them funding for the proper headgear!

There are a lot more riders wearing , what looks like, reasonable helmets now, it is interesting to see this. I watched traffic along the blvd the other day for quite some time, and about 50% of the riders were wearing helmets, which is an amazing increase.

The wife and I were there in January and used DOT approved helmets from the USA. My brother inlaw (who works in the treasury depertment) says we didn't need the stickers. He talked to someone in the LTO. We had no problems.

One thing some people have a hard time grasping here is, laws are enforced capriciously by people who may or may not know the law. You are completely at the whim of the officers on the checkpoint whether or not they will accept your DOT stickered helmet, no matter who your BIL talked to.

Do you pay the officer or do they write a ticket? I think the office where you have to pay the fine would be more knowledgeable.

LOL, obviously you have very limited experience in dealing with offices here.

usually when you get done bang to rights for after being stopped for not wearing a helmet (and you know you are bang to rights because it's not just you, the foreigner that is being done but you are seeing loads of Filipinos being done just like you) the rationale the officers use is that if we were to do it officially down the office, you'd have to pay more, it would take ages, and it's much better all round if we eliminate all the time-wasting red tape nonsense and you just pay a couple of hundred now right here, rather than over a thousand later. You've just got to wear a helmet, especially in cities and even before this law. Blocks in more rural areas aren't anything like as interested in the helmet thing and probably still won't be despite the new law.
