Every time i come to the Philippines i take anti Malaria tabs

    Is it really nescesary?

Do any of you expats living there take anything at all (shots/pills) to protect yourself against tropical diseases etc.

Has anybody ever contracted Malaria there?

    TIA

I think it is wise to have both an Hepatitis A-B as well as a Tetanus injection when coming here or other southeast Asia countries.

It's not malaria here,it's dengue fever which is rife here at the moment. I read somewhere from jan 2012-aug 2012 there was around 2000 cases around Dumaguete.

Yes, it's Dengue that is a minor problem for a otherwise healthy person but like with a cold it can kill you if you are unlucky.
In the 13 years I am here I have not participated in any conversation about preventive measures against Malaria, Hepatitis or Dengue, this may tell you how most foreigners that live here permanently, think about it...

I took some malaria pills in 2006 when I first came here , then upon returning to the U.S. I found out it was a waste of money.
Have lived here full-time now for 3 years, No problem

I think Palawan and northern Luzon has malaria or at least recommended to take malaria tabs. This was advice I got from uk when coming here. Rabies is also recommended but I don't think is needed if careful. Expensive here for the jabs like the western world.

The rabies jab is a matter of personal choice, but it's a bit like insurance. Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. Rabies can start to attack the system in a matter of hours, and it's not uncommon to reach the point of no return within three days. Once it takes a hold, there is no cure and it is 100% fatal. The modern jab is one shot in the arm, unlike when I was bitten by a rabid pitbull in Belize in '89. Then it was a serum with the consistency of treacle, straight into the stomach through a needle thick enough to knit socks on. Luckily I got the serum within two hours of the bite, with a further 5 injections in the first month then one a month for 11 months, and they hurt like hell. It's a contest between the serum and the virus - whichever one gets to the nervous system first is the winner. But, like I say, it's a matter of personal choice.

Starting taking quinine if yourworried, but start slow or it'll give ya a headache. If you drink local beeer don't ever worry about it, tropical beers here have quinine in it to prevent "beer Mothers' from forming.
