Thought this might be useful for any who have relatives in the US who call you regularly. Vonage has a relatively new service allowing unlimited calls from the US to Globe phone numbers in the Philippines (9¢ a minute for calls to other phones) for $29.99/month. Given that this includes the regular Vonage unlimited US calling etc. package and only costs about $5.00 a month more, seems like a good deal.

We decided to ditch our traditional landline and give it a try. We've had it about three weeks, with no problems and good connection quality so far, and it actually costs less than our old US-only plan.

There's nice web interface that lets you track calls (I like to verify that they were actually free), and even lets you verify that phone number is associated with Globe. So far we're very satisfied!

Note: this seems to replace an older Vonage plan that was $64.99/month but covered more phones in the Philippines.

For those who have iphones they can download Magic Jack from the apple store. You can call from the philippines to the US free of charge. The only thing is you need to connect your iphone to the internet. Dial any number in the US and it is free.

kewl:smile:, thanks for the tip! Doesn't work for our relatives as they have only basic cellphones and no internet, but I checked and there's also an Android version I'm going to give a try when we travel.

FYI (and I'm sure this is no big revelation to anyone), our routine when the relatives need to call us is they dial us, we see the number on caller ID and don't answer (no charge to them), we dial right back (which is now for free).

BTW, if folks notice the flurry (pun intended) of activity on my part in the forums, it's probably due to the frigid, snowy weather we've been experiencing here in the Poconos in Pennsylvania, USA. Wish I was there

I had Vonage in Canada and brought with me to the Philippines almost 5 years ago. It worked very well but I had some connection issues depending on my Internet Service Provider. I wasn't up on all the techneical jargon, especially related to Static and Dynamic IP addresses so I had problems troubleshooting connection issues. In the end, I bought a router and connected the Vonage box parallel to the computer and it worked fine afterwards. The box crapped out last year. Vonage offered to give me another one for free but I would have had to return the old box within 30 days so I ended up switching to Magic Jack. It works well also but very poor customer service. It took me more than 8 months to purchase a Canadian phone number from them due to my account being put in review???
