Pope Francis is the first Jesuit pope. Jesuits place a high priority on academics. I hope he can clean up the major problems with the church: Pedophilia among the priests. birth control, abortions, and divorce.

Yes Pat, He certainly has a lot to take on, like the President of Philippines, it would appear that there is corruption within the Halls of Power.
but as they say " Rome was not built in a day".

I read that he went to the San Miguel Seminary. So I guess we've been drinking holy water all these years!

Yes, by all accounts via the Media he is a "good guy ".

I believe it is the first time a non European Pope has been chosen.?

Also I believe he was #2 in the running when Benny was elected last time.

With 40% of the 1.2 B Catholics on the Planet being in Latin America, it was an interesting selection.

He has a monumental task of house keeping to do, that was too big for Benny to handle.:(, so he resigned.

Also, interesting to note, the media were calling it a resignation at first, and recently they have called it an abdication, two very different situations indeed, ............... lol  thats the media for you............

Yes, interesting choice....and likely the best of the contenders.....He's got a lot of work to do to restore faith and confidence....something previous Popes for decades have been unable to accomplish. My gut feeling is...he just may be up to it. However, I understand some of his personal convictions are still very conservative - and he may not bring about the obvious changes needed to align the church with 21st century humanity an challenges. Just wait and see...but off to a good start so far....
