Hello everyone-- I am new here, just found the website. My mom is from Dumaguete... so I have always wanted to come here. I finally am going to make it happen this May/June. I am treating myself as a graduation present -- I am done with medical school. So I am here learning about the city. I am from the USA. My dad is not Filipino, and my mom was mixed, so I pretty much look white. I am a big 6'2" guy, so I will probably stick out when I'm here Oh... and I am single. And now that I'm a doctor and have my work setup for the next couple years... I feel ready to settle. None of my cousins or family will be here to introduce me to anyone while I am here... so I will shamelessly advertise myself on this site. Cheers
Zigpig, welcome and good luck on your quest I've got no introductions for you, but might suggest hanging out at Silliman U., since you're a doctor, especially at the colleges of nursing or medicine. And given the generally friendly and outgoing nature of Filipinos, if you introduce yourself to someone in the school admin. as a recently graduated Fil-Am doctor who is interested in learning about his mom's homeland, you might get a tour and some introductions. One other suggestion, if you're coming "May/June", and have flexibility, earlier is better. Although it can rain almost any time, June begins rainy season (which can be a little later and less severe in Visayas than on Luzon).
Thanks redhorse. My mom went to Silliman University. I tried to set up a hospital rotation there for credit for my school in February, but it didn't end up working out --never got to the right people at Silliman Medical Center. BUT, in doing this, I learned the names of many doctors that said I was welcome to work with them informally. So, I will definitely spend some time at the hospital.
Very cool - I think you'll do fine! A couple more tips, some of the female students may be a little on the shy side, don't mistakenly think they are aloof or don't like you. You may have to approach them politely and introduce yourself (or better yet, have someone else do it). And be prepared to buy lunch for two or three girls at a time in the beginning, even though you're only "seeing" one. Don't worry, still cheaper than a date in the states. And it beats bringing "lola" along, which one gal told me I'd have to do (a LONG time ago, I was a student here)
Oh Lord, I couldn't imagine bringing my grandmother along on a date. She curses like a sailor, isn't shy about talking about sex and claims to be a witch to scare little children (she'll pull out the cards and read your fortune to prove it as well). O-|
haha -- my Grandma is coming back to the US in a couple days, so I will not have the chance to bring her out on dates. My grandma is a bit more reserved than yours wrye83. I think she might actually help me out on a date! Here is a picture of me and her View attachment 9256
Well, Doc, go on the Philippine Enquirer website and check out Ariella Arida, she just won Miss Philippines, World . and if that isnt enough check out the runners up!! Philippine girls are the most pretty in the world!!
I'm sure you'll enjoy it here. I would hide the fact you are a doctor in the US from the girls at first though.
I guess I misphrased that, should have been "And it beats bringing "lola" along, which one gal told me SHE'd have to do"
