The cost of any hernia repair will depend on lots of different factors, principally the size, type and location of the hernia. Mother Nature is pretty clever, but a hernia will not repair itself, and has to be fixed with surgery. Is it a single, a double, lateral, bi-lateral, upper, lower or umbilical ? Do you want it repaired by open surgery or laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery ? Are you overweight ? Is the hernia prominent when you cough or sneeze, does it retreat when you lie down ? Can you push it back in with your hand, if not then it could be strangulating and that's life-threatening serious. Those are just some of the things that the surgeon who will do the operation will take into account.

Then you have your choices. Are you happy with the hospital and its' facilities ? Do you trust, and have confidence, in the surgeon ? What will be the recovery time ? Are they skilled in laparoscopic surgery ? Do you have someone to look after you during the recovery period immediately after surgery ? Remember that nurses here don't nurse or tend, they are little more than ward orderlies. If you have wounds from open surgery, the constant coming and going of a whole throng of unsterile and unhygenic family "helpers" creates the biggest killer of all, cross infection. MRSA and C. Diff are rampant here, is it a risk you are prepared to take ?

No cost for your particular case could be given until the surgeon had given you a close examination and determined the type of surgery that best suits your circumstances. But as a long-nose, you can safely bet that the cost will be racked up. My unqualified guess, for a general repair without complications, would probably put the cost at about 60,000 pesos for the operation, plus about 1000p per day for a private room, plus the cost of any meds. If you must have it done in this country, then I strongly suggest you get to St. Lukes in Manila, where the facilities are infinitely better, more advanced, and more hygenic than Dumaguete. If your hernia is minor, it can be repaired by laparoscopic surgery as an out patient, in and out on the same day. Other than that it will require a few days recovery.

By way of comparison, last year I had a double lower bi-lateral hernia repaired, with laparoscopic surgery, privately in UK. Along with the operation costs, flights, hotels, etc. I probably spent close to 1/2 a million pesos, but I consider it was money well spent. The surgeons were top notch, the nurses properly trained professionals, the surroundings sterile and hygenic. But crucially, the operation was successful, I woke up after it, and I'm still around to tell the tale !!! Get the best that you can afford. There is no sense in skimping with your health and cutting corners to save money, just to become the richest man in the graveyard.

Our daughter just had cleft palate surgery at Silliman Hospital. Besides the cost of the actual surgery, they will itemize and charge you for everything from cotton swabs to milliliters of distilled water. The cost of a private room at Silliman is now Php 2500 per day. Good luck.
