my asawa speaks Ilongo, when she is conversing with Cebuano people it is very interesting listening, she speaks her dialect and they in return speak there's, it is usually because they have worked in area's of a different dialect or have a relative living in another area so they understand each other.
FOR OUR MESTIZO/MESTIZA kids, I think its a big plus for your mestizo to speak local dialect Visaya or Tagalog. Locally, he could be a Diver instructor or a Tourist administrator, or a Resort/hotel operator and i guess tourist would be impress to be welcomed with the long nose that speaks local dialect. Although filipina girls has beautiful smiles that melt some guys and put troubles. Now, realistically, abroad best opportunity goes more to candidates that speaks 3 or more languages(depending on what position or industry). Now if the child is in Business or Tourism industry, most of the well paid individuals speaks 4 languages. In my side, my daughter studies other languages because her friends that already has a good job speaks at least 3-4 languages(Chinese, french,English, german). She made a choice to learn new for her future she said after she speaks fluently in Chinese, Russian seems to be singing to her ears! I guess, it is also good to spent your money to learning purposes or to put your child in sports rather than to give them space of freedom and turn to the wrong directions like sex and drugs.
That would apply to many more places BUT it would not change the fact that English is the most versatile and important language and if you like reading than even more so...
Actually, English is more widely spoken in Europe than most imagine. It is a commonly used business language, as is German. Hang out at Coco Amigos or any other place foreigners frequent in Dumaguete and see what language is most commonly spoken.
Depends on the crowd of foreigners in the place: At the regular gatherings of Skandinavians or Germans in Bogart's you will not hear a single word of English apart from the ordering of beverages from staff....... Vicmico
Hmmmm......maybe you missed this part? "Actually, English is more widely spoken in Europe than most imagine. It is a commonly used business language, as is German."
In my own personal opinion it actually really depends on where do you intend to live and it's purpose? If you plan on travelling around philippines unsure of where you will settle go for TAGALOG because all Filipinos can understand Tagalog but if you intend to stay only in visayas region then go for the bisayan dialect but by saying this, if you have so much time in your hands then why not study both? :-)
