The current status is 28 confirmed dead, 213 unaccounted for, but this figure is naturally changing by the hour. The first indication is that the cargo vessel rammed the passenger ferry which sank very quickly. The cargo vessel did not sink. There is no indication of fault yet, as it is not clear which of the vessels was or was not in the right lane, which will be determined by an inquiry.

My wife have 2 family members, who were on board this ship. They both survived, but are shocked of course. They say, that the cargo vessel was sailing without lights. If that can be confirmed, I really hope authorities will jail the captain for negligent homozide and also ground indefinitly all ships of this very infamous shipping company. Its the same company, which is involved in the most deadly see accident ever back in 1988, when one of their tankers collided with another passenger ferry, caught fire and killed everyone onboard the two ships, more than 4.000 people in all. And since then they have been involved in at least 4 other accidents.

So if one of their vessels has committed such a grave and fundamental error as sailing at night without lights and thereby caused the dead of perhaps another 200 innocent civilian passengers, then enough is really enough.

Maybe someone should teach captains how to read radar!

What good would that do when their vessels have never had a working radar?

Both my wife and I were shocked to hear the news, we would like to extend our thoughts and prayers to the families of those dead or still missing. In this day and age of technology, these accidents should not be happening.

I thought all commercial shipping had to have working radar? Mind you what laws are inforced here!

I skippered both cargo and ferries in asia for 8 years its very easy to get confused with lights close to the coast many on land lights of all colours and distance is hard to distinguish some times, in these cases i always put the first mate on the radar full time. the 2go ferry pasted a full sea worthy inspection 4 weeks ago so one would assume it had a working radar. If the captain threw the roaps off without a working radar he needs to be locked up.
If their was shiping lanes there it will be easier to say who was in the wrong, but i doubt that their was in that part of the coast.
I read that the 2go captain call for a change of course but got no reply. we may never know. A full inquire may get some answers in the mean time their will be many storys n rumours. All in all im glad its not me doing the paper work on this one.
    cheers
