On the other hand there are plenty of local businesses that turn down even free advertising

    Go figure

Well...as a recent visitor to Dumaguete, I went to Why Not for both a meal outside and a beer inside. Lots of people both outside and inside having fun. Not sure why some are knocking it and talking about a downward spiral. I had a good evening.

One brief time spent there does not give you the whole picture.

You are definitly on to something here. Female visitors to a disco don´t find it very flattering to be taken for prostitutes and asked "how much", when they are not. So the increased numbers of freelance prostitutes being allowed to operate inside Why Not has definitly scared other customers away. I know some of them personally.

Also about the new and smaller discos, which has opened, price is a very important thing. These new places offer cheaper drinks and cheaper entry. And while that might not be important to most ex-pats or turists, it is to the young college students. And while Why Not has probably never made much money from these young students anyway, the problem for the establishment is, that without them, they can also not attract the ex-pats and in particular the turists, who might spend 1.000 peso there in one night on fancy drinks, if they really enjoy the atmosphere.

I went back to Whynot last night; hadn't been there in quite some time. Maybe somebody finally took notice because they are, at least, attempting to make some changes. There is no more cover charge. They seem to have gotten rid of the terrible DJ they had before and they are trying out some new DJ's from Bacolod, Cebu and elsewhere. The music, in our opinion was much better than before ... none of that techno-rap-barangay type music that they had ben playing before.

Just for the record, I like Whynot and I believe it is, was, or could be the corner post of Dumaguete for many foreigners and other visitors. It incorporates a decent restaurant, Deli, travel center, internet café, pool room, Karaoke bar, and, of course, the disco. This is the only disco in town where I feel comfortable. My only complaint was the music and I am hoping that, one day, Whynot Disco will regain its foothold for Dumaguete nightlife!

Thanks for the report, and I sort of share the same view, although I have always gone there mostly for the billiard game. But even that had deteriorated, when I went there in july because of the general downward spiral of the place. Most of the regulars, who had been playing there for years, were gone, and in their place were a cupple of guys with their professional "girlfriends". After playing 3 games with the same guy and watching his "girlfriend" act, I had enough and went home :-)

It should be said, that it was a thursday though, so of course not the most busy night for a disco. But in the past, there was always a proper billiard game going on, nomather what day you went there. And that is also no longer the case.

We decided to stop in to Whynot again last night. I wanted to see if I would have the same opinion sober!! They had their regular band, Feefir, from 9pm until 11pm; again, no cover charge. The band is acceptable and there were quite a few people dancing. At 11pm, when they switched to the first of two DJ's, the music cranked up to a regular discotheque volume. I hadn't noticed the new laser lighting on Friday (I guess it pays to be sober sometimes, haha) and I hadn't noticed that they put the bass beat back into the music. Maybe they can get away with using their sub-woofers now that Mamia's is closed. The music was mostly top 40 and nobody was running for the door like before. The DJ kept people dancing and many of the songs had matching videos on the big screens. I think, having a second DJ brings an element of competition and both wanted to make people dance. The place wasn't full and there still seems to be more prostitutes than "regular" female guests but the improvements are very noticeable and I feel that it was a decent disco experience. I think they are finally on the right track and I commend the management but it will take a while to regain their reputation and get the crowds back. I hope it is not to late.

they need to make the karaoke bar smoke free, I don't mean that the smoke you get in your lungs is free, cause it comes with a cost, we was there a few weeks ago, and 7 puffers lit up and we were out of there with my asawa coughing and spluttering, the room is suppose to be for Karaoke, they need to make a puffers and prostie chatters area away from there.
I hope whynot management looks at these posts.
