Maybe your post in the thread about helping to rebuild the house for the invalid shoe repair man, I was wondering if you were serious with what you wrote about helping students...

I notice the Dane or a moderator deleted the posts in question. Many forums do not allow calls for donations to private charities, for if they do, they are soon overrun by requests for donations for this or that, and soon following the scammers will be there too.

I think this was a good example of what I am talking about, Steve asked for donations for his project, and the first thing that happened was immediately Blaze followed suit. Soon would be another, and another...

Yes, but that was spearheaded by Rhoody and Rechel. There is also the Christmas thing, and the Thursday club, but these are run and/or overseen by owners/moderators of the forum. That is not quite the same as a forum member asking for donations to help fund a private cause. Personally I think Steve's cause is a good one, and I feel he would see to it the money went where it was supposed to, but it is not my call (or yours).

On another popular Phils forum, one must get the permission of the forum owner, who will decide if/what will be allowed. Sometimes he will look into it and allow, but most times not.

Even its not explicitly listed in the forum rules, I think it is kind of obvious, that you are not allowed to make posts, where you ask for donations for this or that. There is a special forum for adds, and in that forum it is stated "not for commercial adds". And while a charity cause is perhaps not commercial in the strict sence of the word, it is very close.

    Why I’m leaving the Forum

I joined this forum over six years ago to gather information about living in Dumaguete and the Philippines and to meet people in the area. As the years went by my focus changed to sharing information with others based on my learning experience and doing charitable work (for example, Thursday Club). Lately, I have noticed that, quite often, when somebody posts a valid question or tries to provide information, someone else will come behind either slamming the person or giving rude or unrelated remarks. Even some of the most respected members, like Shadow for example (probably the most respected and most knowledgeable expat on this Forum and a very nice guy besides), is constantly getting slammed. I don’t even feel like answering questions now because of the frustration associated with these unwarranted comments. I also find that reading the threads on this Forum lately has become more and more depressing. Combine that with the fact that I can no longer try to support my charitable endeavors on the Forum and you have my reasons for leaving.

By the way, for those who may think that I was trying to solicit money for personal use, my brother and I have put up the money to buy the materials for that house in Canday’ong. This will be the fourth house that we have helped build in the last two years. We bought all the materials yesterday and construction starts tomorrow.

Why I want my name and personal information removed from the Forum

When I joined this Forum, I was naive in thinking that this Forum was like a kind of free public service. My internet savvy has since improved and I have learnt that most website owners make money from advertising. The more members and the more hits on the site, the greater opportunity to make money. Some forums even hire people to visit the forum constantly to increase the number of hits. With lots of members, even inactive ones, these extra hits go mostly unnoticed by customers. Since the Forum was good for me at the time, I used it in this symbiotic relationship, giving them the hits and my name / avatar in exchange for the privilege of using the forum. Since I will no longer be using the Forum, I would simply like have this information removed. I think this is a reasonable request. At the very least, even if the excuse is not to leave holes in some old threads, I believe, from my research, they can still remove my name / avatar and replace it with something generic like “Departed123” and also clear my profile and settings. It would be much better than having “Banned” put after your name for eternity. I haven’t found any terms and conditions, privacy policy, or any other information on the subject within the Forum. Forum Rules are very basic and seem to get made up as they go along. As you may have noticed, The Dane hasn’t provided any information on this thread on the subject of deleting an account. Maybe he just doesn't have time.

How about we have an exception to the "no charity solicitation" rule and have a charity for SteveB so he can become one of these paid members. That is, if theDane has time, considering how profitable this forum is and all the other paid members he has to manage.

Most other forums I'm on don't allow farewell soapbox speeches. They usually ban the member and delete the thread.

that ask there wifes or google sh*t and come off as experts that need to chill out

    SteveB,

Sad to lose you on the board, you have been a good member and source of information.

I removed your post about the private charity the other day, and sent you a long very polite message with the exact reasons. I was hoping you would understand and even better - agree.

You are/were even a Thursday Club member, so you should have some kind of understanding of how this could/would work?

But it's of course your choice if you leave or not.

The ideal way - and easiest for all parties would be not to start slamming the site, mods and forum for keeping it safer and cleaner. And instead just change your password and email address in the system and never log back in like another member intelligently suggested...

Anyways, on your request I have banned your account and changed your login, password and email address in the system so you will no longer be able to login. I have also - as per your request - changed the dreaded BANNED title so you wont appear as banned.

    Happy trails SteveB
