Thanks, but just moving without knowing important things is what got me into this mess in the first place and is not smart. i already know i like dumaguette and some people i have met from there, but i dont know one of the most important things, how is the internet? can i get a broadband connection which is faster, or only wifi which is slower and not safe? is broadband widely available only in dumaguette or can it be had in duain or valencia etc? i know i cant spell or pronounce things right, lol but the general message is all that is important, thanks

What ever you dont go near CRUZTELCO it is the worst internet service i have ever seen. you can only contact them 8am to 5pm they never follow up a problem its so over loaded you can not get on at peak times any day.
It stops altogether many times through out the day , it pings .0020 up tp 0060 i have never seen the 1 meg we pay for.
the contract says to supply UP TO 1 mg.

The further you get from Dumaguete the fewer choices you will have and the slower the speed is.

I have had Sky cable for internet and TV for a couple of years and in general I am quite satisfied with it. But it also has its' down-times. Over the last weekend a number of TV channels weren't available and the internet was slower than semaphore. But for what is available locally, Sky is probably the best of a bad bunch. The draw back is that its' not available throughout Dumaguete, and the more people that get signed up to it, the less efficient it will become. The misleading sales pitch is, of course, using the phrase "up to".

Back to the theme of the OP's original post. If you give in to threats from rogue landlords you will continue to go under. I suggest that at any time you have any form of conversation with him, have your cell phone in your top pocket on voice record. Secondly, find somewhere that you want to move to, and do a quiet moonlight flit without warning anyone. There are plenty of good landlords around, I have one, but yours sounds like a carbuncle on the butt-hole of mankind. Don't have a head-to-head confrontation, but at the same time don't be intimidated by threat. You're free to walk away, but do it quietly. Should anything come of it later, your defence is that you were put under duress and threatened with violence, ensuring that you can rely on others to corroborate your story.

We are moving to Dumaguete next July. Would it be improper to ask who this Landlord is and the name of the apartments you live? Sounds like this would be a good place to avoid and you would doing all of us that will looking for a home a great service. Thanks!

The OP (and the crap landlord) lives in Tagbilaran, Bohol, and not in Dumaguete. Different island.

You have to watch for some landlords in the Dgte area as well.

Just yesterday morning a friend related to me how his landlord in Valencia on Lagarda St ripped him off for about p5000 of his p6000 deposit with trumped up "charges".

You were misinformed by your friend! Before you bad mouth all landlords you should no the truth. Your friend had a security deposit of p7,000. He had an electric bill of p4,500, which was read the day he moved out. a cable bill of p360 and we only charged him p600 for cleaning. A total of p5,460 he was refunded p1540 of his deposit. He was also given copies of all bills. Apparently he doesn't have the capacity to understand why a security deposit is required, or nor does he understand how to take care of or respect some ones things. the apartment he was residing in was treated like a fraternity house. The apartment basically had to be decontaminated the bedding and pillows had to be thrown out the sofa set had to be reupholstered. The cleaning lady had to wear rubber gloves and a respiratory mask just to enter the apartment. Any of the tenants living in the complex will attest to this. I have no intention to embarrass your friend, I am only defending our honesty and integrity as fair and descent landlords. You should not bad mouth all landlords and try and understand what we have to some times deal with. Truthfully your friend should have not been returned any of his deposit, we only did so because we liked him and didn't want to hurt his feelings. It's amazing how one can't see the truth or maybe just doesn't want to.

Well hopefully that's the real story behind the story then. I was just going on what he told me, and not badmouthing 'all' landlords.

I'm sure landlords have just as many bad stories as renters. In fact I've heard some of those over the years
