I was directed to a post regarding shotokan style karate (found it "closed") and so-called "commando" style being a secretive entity here in Dumaguete. There are two major Shotokan style schools in the Philippines, one in Manila and the other in Cebu. Actually, "shotokan" is never referred to as the style, which is "JKA" -- from the school founded by Gishin Funakoshi, who was a master Okinawa-te karate-ka (practitioner) when he went on to develop a more advanced form of the martial art so that it could be made "competitive." Previously, karate tournaments were never held because a contest between two karate-kas always would end in the death of the other, until the "shotokan" style was developed. In Manila, the main HQ is headed by Kunio Sasaki sensei and and in Cebu by Masanori Takahashi sensei. There is no secret about it. Anybody is welcome to join and improve oneself in character and discipline. I am a member of the JKA (Japan Karate Association; in Japanese - Nihon Karate Kyokai), since 1963, and got my Shodan degree blackbelt. The JKA is all over the world. Google JKA for more info. Peace.
I think it has been established that the "commando" thread and half the posters in it were the work of one wannabe in a fantasyland, trying to promote his "awesome" self as an expert sensei of a secretive ninja class art. In reality he is probably just a lonely boy with a laptop his grandma bought him last Christmas, and has watched way too much television. Thanks SPCD_SU, likewise. I was asked by some members from JKA Ioilo if I could establish a dojo (karate sporting place) here in Dgte. An instructor from Cebu might be interested to come and teach. However, I hardly have the time to arrange these things. Maybe, hopefully someday.
Thank you, Larry. Appreciate it. Btw, I am an expat myself (though previously a native here), having lived in the State for 40 + years. At my "younger" years I had a dojo in L.A. and helped some kids learn the art.
