Wow, did you guys feel nature's fury!? :D

Around 12:30 the winds were kicking up a bit. Shortly after the power was cut. As someone else mentioned here, that was probably precautionary because there wasn't much of a storm. The power just recently came up on.

The storm was nothing to write home about for Dumaguete. The rain was off and on. The wind was a little gusty, but not enough to cause any trouble. The edge of the storm is a pretty good place to be. Others I'm sure aren't so lucky. The Philippines has been through this before though, and the people will pull though.

 

Well. Seems like rotary direction and distance to the storm is wery favorably to DGTE areas.

 

Well, the rotary direction, as far as I understand, is always the same, Clockwise, and in the past, before "Sendong" the people believed in general, that Dumaguete is typhoon free, as I wrote already, the year has not yet ended...
And as for the increased media hype on natural disasters, I can also note that as of 10 years ago, one hardly saw an Ambulance Vehicle anywhere in Negros and nowadays you see them everywhere alongside with Search and Rescue Equipment of all sorts, don't get me wrong but I can not fail to see that people seem to rely more and more on Government Organizations and Social Networks to get their information and don't trust their common sense anymore...
Not a good development in my opinion...

 

If you care to compare the tracks of the two storms, you will notice that "Sendong" and "Paplo" both came over Northern Mindanao, whereas "Yolanda" was hitting Leyte, in order for the storm to hit us, it must come in more southerly because (almost) all storms tend to go northerly while the progress, they don't go south in their track anymore because of Earths rotation...

 

Well the rotary direction together with the distance from center this time make the wind direction favorably to DGTE by having a mountain in the dirct pathway for the wind hitting DGTE areas. Just look at the satelite photos and you will see what I mean.

Of course rotation is the same due to be made by earth rotation.

But as you know places that are hitted by the storms eye the wind direction change, and this is very often a key to devastion of these areas.

 

It looks as though Dumaguete dodged another bullet. Some light wind and a fair amount of rain is all that we experienced here along with about a 4 hour (preventative?) brownout courtesy of NORECO. Thank God!

A direct, full force hit would have flattened this area.

 

Actually the rotary direction does make a difference. It always spins counter clockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the southern hemisphere. Since we are in the north and they are spinning counter clockwise the wind at the north side (if travelling west) will increase by the speed the storm is traveling and will be reduced in the south by the same. Similar to an airplane taking off up wind or down wind and the effect of wind over the wings.
