That's one hell of a smacking. The airport runway is a write-off, so the only way in for relief is by chopper or sea. The situation may get compounded now. Tropical Depression "Zorayda" is reportedly some 600 kms east of Siargao Island and headed this way. Storm Signal 1 has already been hoisted over Dinagat, Surigao and Agusan. It might follow a similar path to Yolanda but that is only a rough prediction at the moment. It is forecast to be over Tagbilaran, Bohol, by Wednesday morning. It is nowhere near as strong as Yolanda, but the potential heavy rains that accompany it will certainly hamper the relief work on Leyte and Samar. Source: PAGASA, via Brit embassy .
A report I read this morning said the US was sending troops in by helicopter to first repair the runway to make way for C130s. Larry
That would make a lot of sense. Only need to make a short section of the runway useable. A Fat Albert can just about land on a dollar bill.
True enough, although it takes quite a number of dollar bills to get it off the ground in the first place!
When I see that wide spread devastation, like New Orleans after Katrina, I have to ask...is it wise to even try to rebuild? The Philippines with their limited funding, technology, engineering expertise; and the wide spread corruption and graft...I am wondering....should Ormoc become the big city and just let Tacloban fade back into the jungle and the people disperse to wherever they would like to call their new home. Given the limitations in the Phils, I just can't imagine Tacloban being anything like its former self for at least 20 years...possibly more. I feel for the people, and I can't really imagine going through what they are going through, but realistically speaking....a new Tacloban..really? you think so?
My sympathy to all our Kababayans in Visayas particulary in the entire Leyte. This is really devastating and I hope that the Government could do something more like a little faster atleast they will have food to eat. Not eating anything in 5 days is just so hepless. My sincere gratitude to those 22 countries members in the UN who extend their great help to our country. Keep praying and we know that God is always good.
